Halloween Candy Do’s and Don’ts

- DO brush and floss regularly
- DO wait 30 minutes before brushing to let saliva neutralize acids
- DO limit the amount and frequency of candy consumption
- DO eat candy with meals or at scheduled times
- DO rinse with water and/or chew xylitol gum after eating candy when brushing isn’t an option
- DO choose chocolates, cookies, or other candies that don’t stick to your teeth
- DO consider donating extra candy to charities, the military or other community programs

- Do NOT graze on candy all day, exposing teeth to sugars frequently
- Do NOT eat gooey, gummy, or sticky candies (like caramels or gummy bears) or suck on hard candies that dissolve slowly, as these types of candies stick to teeth and expose teeth to sugar over longer periods
- Do NOT eat sour candies as they contain more acidic ingredients that increase overall acidity and further enamel breakdown
- Do NOT bite into or chew hard, sticky candies that can break or pull off your fillings or other restorations
- Do NOT forget to floss between the teeth where sugar hides
