Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor
I help parents navigate difficult relationships with their children using practical, evidence-based tools so you can rebuild trust, communicate clearly, and feel grounded in your evolving role as a parent. I’m Afton Turner, a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor in Kentucky and a mental health coach serving clients anywhere in the world. I specialize i

n helping teens, adults, and families navigate anxiety, trauma, relationship stress, and major life transitions. With more than 10 years of experience across child protective services, school-based therapy, IOP treatment, and community mental health, I bring a deep understanding of how our past and present experiences shape our emotional world. I blend evidence-based therapeutic tools with real-life strategies that actually make sense outside of session. For coaching clients, I provide support, clarity, and guidance without the clinical focus of therapy, honest conversations and helpful direction. I offer weekend virtual therapy sessions for Kentucky residents and mental health coaching for clients nationwide. If you’re looking for someone who truly listens, understands complex family dynamics, and can help you move forward with confidence, you’re in the right place.

This is one of the most common questions I hear from clients.

The answer often has less to do with memory and more to do with how the nervous system stored the experience.

When an event remains unprocessed, reminders can trigger the same emotions, physical sensations, and beliefs that were present when it originally happened.

EMDR helps the brain recognize that the event is over.

For many clients, that's when the past finally starts to feel like the past.

One of the reasons these conversations can feel so painful is that both people are often carrying grief.

They're just grieving different things.

When we understand that, it becomes easier to see the hurt underneath the conflict.

Do you feel you are grieving what was or what has never been?

Insight is often the first step.

But insight and healing are not the same thing.

Many clients can explain exactly why they struggle with conflict, trust, anxiety, perfectionism, or boundaries.

What frustrates them is that understanding the pattern doesn't stop the pattern.

EMDR helps bridge the gap between knowing something intellectually and actually feeling different emotionally.

Love matters.

Feeling understood matters too.

Many family relationships struggle not because love is absent, but because people have difficulty recognizing and responding to each other's emotional experiences.

One does not automatically create the other.

Have you ever known you were loved but still felt misunderstood? How did you navigate this?

Trauma isn't defined by how bad something was.

It's defined by how your brain stored the experience.

That's why two people can go through similar events and walk away with very different outcomes.

EMDR helps the brain reorganize memories that continue to trigger intense emotional reactions.

Many clients still remember exactly what happened.

The difference is that the memory no longer feels like it's happening right now. They control the memory, the memory does not control them.

It's important to note that while going through the EMDR process you will not be reliving these experiences, we will revisit in safe and supported ways.

Many people can tolerate mistakes.

What becomes harder to carry is feeling unseen, dismissed, or alone in the experience.

Acknowledgment doesn't erase pain.

But it often changes how heavy it feels.

Have you been able to forgive what has been said and done but wonder why you're still carrying tension in these relationships?

Different relationship.

Different friendship.

Different workplace.

Same feelings. Same reactions. Same patterns.

One thing EMDR often helps uncover is that the current situation isn't always what's creating the strongest reaction.

Sometimes an argument with a partner activates the same feelings that showed up with a parent.

Sometimes criticism from a boss touches an old wound that has nothing to do with work.

When the emotional response feels bigger than the situation, there is often a reason.

EMDR helps identify and process those connections.

When someone talks about a painful experience, they're usually trying to explain how something affected them.

The conversation often goes sideways when hurt is heard as blame, criticism, or rejection.

Pain and attack are not the same thing.

Have you ever shared an experience with someone and instead of listening they took it personally?

They learned that being helpful kept the peace.
Being easy earned approval.
Being responsible made them feel valuable.

The challenge is that insight doesn't automatically change the pattern.

EMDR can help people process the experiences that taught them those lessons in the first place, making it easier to develop new beliefs about themselves without feeling guilty for doing so.

Families can spend time together, talk regularly, celebrate holidays together, and still feel emotionally distant.

Closeness isn't measured by proximity.

It's measured by feeling known, understood, and accepted by the people around you.

Have you ever been in a room of people and felt alone? Were you a child that spent more time in your bedroom than in gathering places?
