There is a moment where you hand a kid the book you loved at their age, and you have to sit there and wait.

Sometimes it lands. Sometimes they get forty pages in, shrug, and go outside. That is the risk of the whole thing.

But every so often you catch them reading it in the back seat, and it becomes theirs instead of yours. The copy comes back with a cracked spine and dog-eared corners and you cannot even be annoyed about it.

Happy Book Lovers Day. Whether it is a chapter at bedtime or the same picture book for the ninth night running, reading with your kids is a good use of an August evening. ๐Ÿ“š

What did you pass down that actually stuck?

We hear some version of this every August. A kid puts on a first pair of glasses, takes three steps, and announces that the ground is sloping or the doorway is bending. Parents usually assume something went wrong with the prescription.

The brain has spent years compensating for a blurry signal, and now it is getting a clean one. It needs a little time to stop correcting for a problem that is no longer there. Most kids settle within a few days, sometimes closer to two weeks.

Which is the whole argument for doing this now rather than the week school starts. Let the strange floor happen at home in August, not in a hallway between third period and fourth.

Does it seem like more kids wear glasses now than when you were growing up? You are not imagining it. Nearsightedness in children has been increasing for years, and more time spent on screens and books, along with less time outside, may be part of the reason.

Spending time outdoors can help slow nearsightedness from getting worse. It is not just because kids are looking farther away. Natural daylight may also help their eyes develop properly. About two hours outside each day is a great goal.

With whatโ€™s left of summer, letโ€™s give them one more reason to put down the screen and head outside. Their eyes will thank you.

Somewhere around the start of a school year, a lot of teens start asking the same question. Can I switch to contacts?

There is no magic birthday for it. Readiness has more to do with responsibility than age. Contacts ask for clean hands, a real daily routine, and the discipline to follow the care steps every time. A mature eleven year old might handle them beautifully, while an older teen who tends to forget things might do better waiting a while. You know your kid.

For sports, contacts can be a real upgrade. No fogging, no slipping, no frame in the way of a quick glance down the field. We fit teens for them all the time and walk them through wearing and caring for lenses the right way, so it starts off on solid footing.

If contacts are on your teen's wish list this year, come talk it through with us.

On Parents' Day, here's something worth remembering. Kids pick up far more from what we do than from what we tell them, and that includes how we look after our own health.

A child who watches a parent wear sunglasses without being nagged, set a screen down to rest their eyes, or treat an eye appointment as a normal part of life tends to grow into an adult who does the same. None of it requires a lecture. They're simply taking notes.

So this is a nice week to model the thing you would want for them. Book the eye exam you have been putting off. Wear the sunglasses on the boat. The habits you keep quietly become the ones they keep too.

Happy Parents' Day from all of us. ๐Ÿ’™

Today is World Brain Day, and the brain pulls off something remarkable with how we see.

When one eye sends a weaker, blurrier signal, the brain doesn't show you the mess. It leans on the stronger eye and stitches together a clear, convincing picture, smoothing the whole thing over.

With kids, if one eye isn't seeing well, the brain can quietly favor the good one and let the weaker eye fall further behind. Nothing looks wrong from the outside. The child sees fine, acts fine, and has no idea anything is off, because the brain has it handled.

This is amblyopia, and childhood is the window when it's most treatable. It's one of the biggest reasons we like to see kids early, even when their vision seems perfect. The brain is good at hiding it, so a real exam is how we find it.

It's National Ice Cream Day, which might be the easiest holiday to celebrate all year. ๐Ÿฆ

So here's our official recommendation. Find a scoop you love, sit somewhere in the shade, and enjoy every bite of it. Loves Park has no shortage of good spots, and a summer Sunday is exactly what they're for.

Go get the ice cream!
