When your child is overwhelmed, dysregulated, or on the verge of a meltdown—start with the body 💛

Teaching your child belly breathing gives them a real tool to calm their nervous system—not just “calm down.”

Try this together:

1️⃣ Have your child sit or lie comfortably

2️⃣ Place a hand (or small stuffed animal 🧸) on their belly

3️⃣ Inhale slowly through the nose for 4 seconds
→ Filling the belly with air

4️⃣ Hold for 2 seconds

5️⃣ Exhale slowly through the mouth for 6 seconds
→ Releasing the air from the belly

6️⃣ Repeat for 5–10 breaths

Why this works:
When kids are dysregulated, their bodies are in “alarm mode.” Slow, deep breathing signals safety to the brain—helping them settle, think clearly, and regain control.

💡 Tip: Practice this when your child is calm so it’s easier to use during big emotions

Save this for your parenting toolbox 💛

Cupcake Breathing 🧁

When your child is having big emotions, give them something simple and calming to focus on 💛

Cupcake breathing is a gentle way to help your child slow their body down and regain control.

Try this together:

1️⃣ Have your child sit comfortably

2️⃣ Ask them to imagine holding a cupcake

3️⃣ Inhale slowly through the nose for 4 seconds smelling the cupcake

4️⃣ Pause briefly

5️⃣ Exhale slowly through the mouth for 6 seconds to blow out the candle

6️⃣ Repeat for 5–10 breaths

✨ Keep breaths slow and steady

Why this works:
Slowing the breath helps your child’s nervous system shift out of stress mode and back into a calm, regulated state.

💡 Tip: Practice when calm so they can use it during big feelings

Save this for later 💛

Square Breathing ⬜

When your child needs help slowing down, structure can make it easier 💛

Square breathing gives them a simple pattern to follow, making calming their body more manageable.

Try this together:

1️⃣ Have your child sit comfortably

2️⃣ Inhale slowly through the nose for 4 seconds
→ Filling the belly with air

3️⃣ Hold for 4 seconds

4️⃣ Exhale slowly through the mouth for 4 seconds
→ Releasing the air from the belly

5️⃣ Hold for 4 seconds

6️⃣ Repeat the square for 4–6 rounds

✨ Each side of the square is one step

Why this works:
The predictable rhythm helps slow the nervous system and improves focus, making it easier for your child to regain control.

💡 Tip: Trace a square with your finger while breathing to help them follow along

Save this for later 💛

Your child isn’t “being difficult”… they’re having difficulty regulating 💛

Emotional regulation is the skill that helps children:
✨ Understand what they’re feeling
✨ Manage big emotions without meltdowns
✨ Express themselves in healthy ways

The truth?
Kids aren’t born knowing how to do this—they learn it through support, practice, and guidance.

Without these skills, you might see:
✔ Tantrums or emotional outbursts
✔ Shutdown or withdrawal
✔ Difficulty communicating feelings
✔ Struggles with peers or behavior

But with the right support, this can change 🌱

That’s exactly what we focus on in Emotion Explorers—helping children build confidence, emotional awareness, and real-life coping skills in a supportive group setting.

💛 Small group
💛 Therapist-led
💛 Skills your child will actually use

Spots are limited and we start April 25th

👉 Don’t wait—give your child the tools they need to thrive
