Do you need someone to hold space and help you through things? How have people done this for you specifically in healthcare, I would love to have you comment and share your positive experiences. 💚
I just had an MRI of my knee done. I tore my meniscus a few months ago and I’ve been trying to heal that. My doctor wanted to make sure that it’s nothing more than that so he ordered an MRI. I really do not like having MRIs, I have had several to check on my brain lesions due to my MS over the years.
I don’t like being in the machine and thankfully this time was quick!
As I’m going into the room and laying in this machine the two people who were administering this exam, getting me all set up, were very kind and very calming. They showed compassion. They asked me simple questions about things that would make me comfortable, like what kind of music I wanted to hear, if I needed a blanket, and told me what was happening.
In the 20 minutes that I was in there, I just started thinking….that’s what we do as healthcare providers.
As a nurse, I pride myself in my ability to bring comfort to my patients in any big or small way that I can offer it. Being a nurse allows me to offer space for acceptance, comforting, and teaching. I have learned when a patient might need some humor to break the situation up a little bit, to make them feel like they are human, to make them feel like they are ready for whatever is about to happen. I know when to bring some quiet, maybe hold a hand, perhaps rub a back when silence is what they need in that space and place. I know when to offer a few words of comfort, I know when to ask questions, I can look at a patient and see and feel how they may be feeling. This is empathy that many healthcare professionals have and offer on a daily basis.
I also know as a healthcare professional sometimes we loss sight of this because of how stressful work can be. But as a patient, we desperately need empathy, we desperately need people who are able to stand by our side and make us feel a little bit more comfortable. Somebody to hold that space for us. Somebody to be attuned to how we are feeling and what we need in that moment.
Outside of my nursing profession, I want to teach these skills, the ability to find comfort on our own and that ability to offer comfort to others.
💚I am honored to get to hold space for others everyday! 💚
