So… what is The Wilds?

I’ve been asked this question a lot lately, and I love that people are curious! Get ready for a magical experience in Lubbock!

The Wilds is an indoor place where children can explore, discover, build, imagine, and wonder.

There aren’t flashing arcade games or scoreboards. No “right way” to play or explore.

Instead, imagine crawling through towering prairie grass into hidden tunnels. Climbing into a giant nest. Redirecting streams of water. Discovering secret spaces. Building. Experimenting. Asking, “What’s over there?”

I want children to leave with dirty knees, big ideas, and stories to tell.

The Wilds is designed around a simple belief:

Children don’t need more entertainment. They need more opportunities to wonder.

It’s being created primarily for ages 3–10, but my hope is that parents and older siblings will find themselves just as captivated. I certainly do!

I have a weakness…

Antique phones.

I only remember ever being enchanted with them. The mechanics, the alluring power of turning the rotary wheel, the satisfaction in a proper hang up… plus there’s mystery and intrigue! History, whispered secrets throughout its life-as-phone…

Children today don’t grow up with phones like these. They don’t know the weight of a receiver, the sound of a rotary dial, or the jarring excitement that comes with the loud ring.

Who called? Who answered? What story happened here?

I’ve been collecting ideas for The Wilds Lubbock, and I keep coming back to the thought of a child wandering through tall prairie grass and unexpectedly finding a beautiful phone.

They pick it up… and someone answers from somewhere else in The Wilds.

Maybe it’s another child.

Maybe it’s a clue.

Maybe it’s simply someone saying, “Hello?”

I kinda love the magic of it!

What if kids explored a world where directions were measured in prairie dog bounds instead of feet??

I found out about the earthquake in Venezuela last night and immediately thought of my family there.

To assuage my concern, I told myself, “They’re about half a Texas away from Caracas.”

It hit me a second later how incredibly Texan that sounded, and I loved it!

Growing up on the farm, directions were always, “Go a mile north of the Johnson place.” Everyone knew exactly where that was.

When I lived in Venezuela, directions were completely different.

“It’s about ten minutes walking.”

“Go three streets that way.”

Neither is more “correct.” They’re simply different ways of understanding distance—ways that make sense to the locals.

That got me wondering…

What if The Wilds quietly celebrated that… in prairie terms?

Imagine wandering through the labrynth-like prairie grass and discovering trail signs that read:

⭐ 0.0024 Texases
🐴 8 Horse Lengths
🦫 27 Prairie Dog Bounds
⛈️ 3 Thunder Booms

None of those are “real” measurements.

But somehow… they all tell you exactly what you need to know.

Maybe that’s a part of what wonder is. Not everyone measures the world the same way.

Sometimes you measure it in miles, sometimes in minutes. And sometimes…
in Texases!

If your hometown had its own unit of measurement, what would it be?

Which sounds most interesting to you?

Summer field days are beginning!

The first small Wilds gathering is coming June 27.

This will be a free pool party with exploratory play, water, movement, prairie/tunnel prototypes, loose parts, wind/ribbon environments, and a chance to step into the earliest stages of what The Wilds is becoming.
