While walking her daughter's service dog at a local park, Vela was attacked by two stray dogs, sustaining serious injuries to her legs, arms, and hands.

From recruiting and hiring nurses across Texas, the United States, and internationally to providing flexible staffing support throughout the hospital, the team works behind the scenes to ensure patients have access to the care they need when they need it. 💙

UMC shares Dr. Amber Coon’s concern about access to OB/Gyn care in West Texas. Our community needs more physicians, and we believe UMC Physicians, Texas Tech Physicians and other providers all have an important role to play in meeting that need.

We appreciate Dr. Coon’s many years of service to our community and passion to serve patients. UMC remains committed to working collaboratively with Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center and Texas Tech Physicians to find solutions that expand access to care and keep the focus where it belongs - on the patients and families we collectively serve. UMC’s priority is to serve the community and ensure patients of West Texas have access to timely, high-quality care. We believe UMC Physicians has an important role in helping recruit and retain physicians needed for our community for OB/Gyn and other specialties.

We are hopeful that our organizations can work collaboratively toward that shared objective.

UMC Health System and Texas Tech Physicians operate as separate organizations with independent leadership and governance. However, UMC cannot hire or replace doctors in any of our specialties, including OB/Gyn, without approval / clinical appointment granted by the Texas Tech School of Medicine. The related clinical appointments requested by UMC were declined by the Texas Tech School of Medicine.

Michelle Richardson never expected a normal day to turn into the beginning of a life-changing journey. For most of her life, she had been busy with family, work, and enjoying outdoor activities at their home on the lake. What began as concern soon became something far more serious: a diagnosis that no one is ever prepared to hear. Cancer.
