🧠 Your spine isn’t just scaffolding. It’s a sensory organ.

Most people think of the spine as the framework that holds us upright and protects the spinal cord.

But your spine is doing MUCH more than that.

Every joint, muscle, and ligament surrounding your spine is packed with sensory receptors constantly sending information to your brain about:

✨ Where your body is in space
✨ How you’re moving
✨ Muscle tension and joint position
✨ Balance and coordination
✨ What’s happening in the environment around you

This constant stream of information is called proprioception — and your spine is one of the body’s richest sources of it.

The upper cervical spine is especially interesting because of its incredibly high concentration of sensory receptors and its close relationship with the brainstem.

So when we evaluate the spine, we aren’t simply asking:

We’re looking at how well your spine is moving, how your nervous system is receiving sensory information, and how efficiently your brain and body are communicating.

Let's talk about pelvic floor prep — and no, we don't just mean Kegels.

So much of the conversation around the pelvic floor focuses on RECOVERY after birth. And that matters. But prep matters too — arguably more, because a pelvic floor that's balanced and mobile going INTO labor has an easier time doing its job during labor.

A tight, guarded pelvic floor isn't actually a "strong" one. Strength without the ability to release and lengthen can make it harder for baby to descend and rotate the way they need to.

That's where nervous system care comes in. When your pelvic floor is connected to a regulated nervous system, it has an easier time doing both things it needs to do in labor: bearing down AND releasing.

If you're expecting, this is your reminder that pelvic floor prep isn't something you cram in during the third trimester — it's something you can start building capacity for now.

Does your baby always turn their head the same direction, latch better on one side, or tilt the same way in the bottle? It's not really "preference" — here's what's actually going on and how we can help. 👶

In-utero positioning: extended time in a particular position late in pregnancy — especially in a smaller or asymmetrical space — can create lasting tension on one side of the neck before birth even happens. Getting your newborn checked by a pediatric chiropractor during the first week of life is essential if baby was breech, transverse, or in one position the entire pregnancy.

Birth mechanics: how baby moved through (or was assisted through) the birth canal — a fast delivery, a long labor, or the use of vacuum or forceps — can create uneven tension in the neck muscles, especially the SCM (sternocleidomastoid). Every birth is stressful on these sweet babes body and chiropractic allows for the tension to melt away quickly.

Congenital muscular torticollis: a true tightening or shortening of the SCM on one side, which physically limits how far baby can turn their head the other direction. Chiropractic has shown to have tremendous benefits when it comes to creating balance and ease in the upper neck.

Habitual positioning after birth: always laying baby the same direction in the crib, or feeding from the same side, can reinforce and worsen an existing asymmetry rather than cause it outright.

Comfort and path of least resistance: once any tension exists, turning toward the tight side is simply easier — so baby defaults to it, which reads as "preference" but isn't one.

A calm, beautiful birth story and a stressed baby nervous system aren't mutually exclusive — and that surprises a lot of parents. 🤍

Even in the gentlest births, baby's body absorbs significant physical forces simply moving through the birth canal — compression, rotation, and traction on the head, neck, and spine that every baby experiences to some degree, regardless of how smoothly the birth went.

This isn't about anything going "wrong"; it's simply what the birth process asks of a tiny, still-developing body. That physical stress can show up afterward as difficulty settling, a preference for turning the head one direction, trouble feeding on one side, or a nervous system that seems to stay a little more "wound up" than expected.

That's why we love checking newborns early: a gentle, non-invasive scan lets us see how their neuro-spinal system is adapting to life outside the womb, so we can support that transition from the very start.

Here's what's actually happening in your nervous system, explained simply. 🧠

One adjustment sends your brain a new signal. Your brain notices — but one signal rarely outweighs a pattern that's been reinforced for years. That's not a flaw, it's just how brains work.

The magic happens with repetition. Show your brain that same new signal again and again, and it starts to trust it. Enough consistent input, and your brain actually starts reorganizing around the NEW pattern instead of defaulting back to the old one.

Eventually, that corrected pattern becomes the new default, not something you have to think about or maintain. It just becomes how your body naturally operates.

This reframe changes everything: your child isn't being difficult, their body is having a difficult time regulating. 💛

Behavior is communication — and big emotions, meltdowns, and "big behavior" are often the visible tip of a nervous system that's tipped into fight-or-flight and doesn't yet have the tools to bring itself back to calm on its own.

A dysregulated nervous system can't be reasoned or punished back into regulation; what it actually needs is co-regulation — the calm, steady presence of a regulated adult, which helps the child's own nervous system learn, over time, what settled feels like and how to find its way back there.

This is also why we look at kids' nervous systems directly: when the neuro-spinal system is clear and functioning well, the body has an easier time moving through stress and returning to baseline instead of staying stuck in that activated state.

When we shift from "what's wrong with my kid" to "what does my kid's nervous system need right now," everything softens.

We all have "that side" we default to when carrying a kiddo — but consistently favoring one hip creates asymmetrical loading on your spine and pelvis, and your body compensates for that imbalance every single time you do it.

When you carry weight on one hip, your pelvis tends to hike up on that side while your spine curves in the opposite direction to keep you balanced, which means one set of muscles is working harder to stabilize you while the other side stays comparatively underused.

Over months and years of repeating that same one-sided pattern, day after day, it can gradually shift how your pelvis sits at rest, how your spine holds its natural curves, and how evenly your muscles are working on each side, even when you're not carrying anything at all.

Your nervous system is constantly adapting to compensate for this asymmetry in the background, which can quietly build tension you don't notice until it shows up as something more noticeable, like recurring low back or hip discomfort.

Whether it's from a C-section, another surgery, or an old injury, scar tissue doesn't just sit there quietly — it can create fascial tension that pulls on surrounding structures long after the wound itself has healed.

Fascia is a connective web that runs throughout the entire body, so tension in one area, like a healing incision, can create restriction and compensation patterns well beyond the scar site itself, sometimes affecting posture and nervous system communication in ways that aren't obvious at first. As scar tissue forms, it tends to lay down in a denser, less organized pattern than the surrounding tissue, which can make that area less mobile and cause nearby muscles, joints, and nerves to compensate for the restriction.

Over time, that compensation pattern can travel — a C-section scar can influence hip and low back mechanics, and a shoulder surgery scar can affect neck and upper back tension, simply because everything in the body is connected through this fascial web.

This is exactly where chiropractic care can help. Alongside gentle, specific adjustments to support nervous system communication, we also use hands-on tissue mobilization techniques to help release restriction directly at the scar site and along the compensation patterns it's created — helping the surrounding fascia move and glide the way it's meant to again.

This is something we love assessing, especially for postpartum mamas healing from birth, since scar tissue is such a common and often overlooked piece of the postpartum recovery picture.
