New research is shedding light on how substance use patterns are connected.

A study drawing on data from the 2024 National Survey on Drug Use and Health found that individuals who used ma*****na in the past year were 12.1 times more likely to have also used psilocybin than those who did not use ma*****na.

The research also found that past-year use of to***co, alcohol, co***ne, L*D, ketamine, ecstasy, and DMT was associated with psilocybin use, showing how use of one substance often increases the likelihood of using another.

As the authors noted, these patterns highlight the importance of considering psilocybin within the broader landscape of polysubstance use, particularly when assessing health risks or designing prevention strategies. And as psychedelics become increasingly normalized and commercialized, these concerns are only expected to grow.

Understanding the connections between substances helps us better protect our communities here in East Texas.

Did you know parental alcohol use is linked to about 1 in 10 cases of child maltreatment?

Children whose parents use substances face a significantly higher risk of maltreatment and child welfare involvement compared to other children.

But here is what else we know: recovery is possible, and families can heal. When parents get the support they need, children thrive.

We are beyond grateful to the Family Crisis Center of East Texas for once again shining a light on the important work happening right here in our region! 🙌❤️

In this episode of Conversations and Connections, host Stuart sits down with our very own Kim Bartel, Regional Alliance Coordinator for Alcohol and Drug Awareness Council (ADAC) and Prevention Resource Center Region 5 (PRC5), to take a closer look at substance abuse in East Texas.

Substance abuse affects families, workplaces, and communities across our region every single day. At Alcohol and Drug Awareness Council (ADAC), we are committed to having these important conversations and getting real information into the hands of the people who need it most.

We encourage everyone to give this episode a listen and share it with someone who may need to hear it. Knowledge is the first step toward change.

Every community is affected by excessive alcohol use, and awareness is one of the most powerful tools we have for prevention.

According to the CDC, alcohol-related harms contribute to hundreds of preventable deaths every single day in the U.S., impacting people of all ages, families, and communities. Beyond physical health, excessive alcohol use can also affect mental well-being and family stability.

Sharing accurate information, supporting healthy choices, and reducing stigma around seeking help all make a difference.
