✨ August Reflections with St. Luke's Health Memorial – A Member of CommonSpirit ✨

As we step into August, our hearts and minds at St. Luke's Health Memorial are turning to a powerful, essential force: HOPE.

But what truly is hope? For us, hope isn't just wishful thinking. It's that quiet, persistent belief in a positive outcome, even when circumstances are challenging. It's the inner strength that sustains us, the light that guides us through darkness, and the fundamental trust that things can, and often do, get better. It's the promise of healing, the expectation of brighter days, and the courage to keep moving forward.

We want to hear from you, our wonderful community! 💬

What does hope look like or feel like for you? How would you describe it? Share your thoughts in the comments below. Let's inspire each other with our definitions of hope this month. ❤️

Organizers of "Totes of L.O.V.E. (love overcomes virtually everything)," invite you to join them in a personal ministry sewing totes for children in foster care or alternative care situations.

It is an idea inspired by Zayda Villanueva, receptionist at Temple Cancer Center on the campus of St. Luke’s Health-Memorial Lufkin. “I found out that some of these kids walk out of their home with a trash bag. And, I’m like nope that’s not for Angelina County. God placed in my heart to sew tote bags so I started a ministry– sewing tote bags for kids."

Inside each tote bag there are essential products including deodorant, soap, shampoo, feminine hygiene products, a Bible and a journal and other basic needs items.” The age categories are babies/Toddlers, Young children (5yrs - 10yrs), and PreTeens/Teens.

Each journal includes a personal note and a sacred verse shared by Totes of L.O.V.E. dedicated volunteers.

“As we cut and sew, we dedicate our work to prayer so that every stitch represents our support,” says Zayda.

Once the tote bags are complete, Totes of L.O.V.E. volunteers will gather to pray. “Our prayers are for the children who will receive them, those caring for them, government agencies, advocates, judges, and as well as for their parents and families,” Zayda explains.

Their first meeting is August 1, 2026 from 9am - noon at Lufkin First Church of the Nazarene, located at 1604 S Medford Dr, Lufkin, TX 75901. If you have any questions or would like further information visit https://ow.ly/PFhN50Zow3U

A Legacy of Community Healing
Eighty years strong, eight decades of dedication, grit, and an unwavering belief in the power of collective action! That's the extraordinary story woven into the very fabric of the Angelina County Citizens Chamber of Commerce, and it recently culminated in a profound testament to its resilience: the grand opening of their magnificent new office complex! More than just a building, this new facility stands as a vibrant beacon, a tangible reminder of past great works and the boundless potential that lies ahead.
In 1940, a group of exceptional men, fueled by a shared vision, came together to establish the Angelina County Citizens Chamber of Commerce. Their promise was simple: to serve the civil, cultural, and economic needs of area citizens, with a particular focus on the burgeoning community of north Lufkin.
From those foundational promises sprang a torrent of initiatives designed to make East Texas a better place for all.
Housing for All: They embarked on the ambitious project of creating Pinewood Park, a low-income apartment complex offering families a crucial stepping stone to stability.
Nurturing Our Youngest: Their empathy extended to the youngest members of the community, leading to the establishment of much-needed daycare centers, providing nurturing care and a safe haven for children.
Dignity for Our Seniors: Perhaps one of their most impactful contributions addressed the plight of a segment often overlooked: the elderly. Acknowledging the dire straits faced by many seniors, the Citizens Chamber rose to the occasion, developing the Inez Tims Apartments and Inez Tims Village. These groundbreaking initiatives provided not just housing, but a supportive environment for independent and assisted living, ensuring dignity and comfort for some of the most vulnerable in our community. These creations, born from compassion and commitment, stand as monuments to the Chamber's unwavering dedication to its citizens.
The ribbon-cutting ceremony for their new complex, located at 1105 Kurth Dr. in Lufkin, was not merely a celebration of brick and mortar; it is a reaffirmation of this enduring legacy.
As they embark on this new chapter, armed with a beautiful new facility and an impassioned leadership, St. Luke’s Health, a member of CommonSpirit, salutes the Angelina County Citizens Chamber of Commerce for its great works and contributions to East Texas.
