High blood pressure is often silent, but it should never be ignored.

May is National Stroke Month, and it’s a good time to check in on one number that matters: your blood pressure. Even when you feel fine, high blood pressure can put extra strain on your blood vessels and raise your risk for stroke.

The good news is that knowing your numbers is a strong first step.

Meet Euclide Gaines, MSN, BSN, RN, manager of the emergency department at Ochsner Health Medical Center - New Orleans.

Euclide makes sure patients receive efficient and high-quality care in Ochsner’s ER and wanted to be a nurse because it combined science, critical thinking and human connection.

"The emergency department, in particular, drew me in because it is fast paced, unpredictable and centered on helping patients at critical turning points,” Euclide said.

Euclide is hopeful about future generations of nurses.

"I hope to influence the future of nursing by advocating for strong nursing leadership, process driven practice and a culture that values staff engagement and wellness," he said. "I aim to mentor nurses into leadership roles, promote data-driven decision making and help redesign care models that improve patient flow while protecting nurses from burnout and moral distress."

Looking back, Euclide’s biggest inspiration comes directly from his own team.

"My biggest influence has been the frontline nurses I’ve worked alongside during high stress moments," Euclide said. "Watching nurses remain calm, adaptable and patient centered under pressure reinforced my belief that strong leadership and teamwork can transform chaos into coordinated care."

Thank you, Euclide, for bringing your expertise and patient centered care to our emergency department. Happy Nurses Week!

Ian Smith, RN, an emergency medicine RN supervisor at Ochsner Medical Center - West Bank, was drawn to nursing through the values of community service instilled by his parents, both career public educators. 💙

Seeing his father’s strength when going through cancer treatments gave Ian a unique perspective on healthcare, one that was grounded in empathy, advocacy and support for people at their most vulnerable. He learned to see care through the patient and family’s eyes.

"He was incredibly proud of my career, and he often said my nursing graduation was one of his happiest days," Ian said. "I honor him every shift by being a steady, compassionate resource for patients facing their own traumatic events."

Now, as a supervisor in the emergency department, Ian oversees patient flow and wants to create a stable, supportive environment for both his team and patients, no matter how unpredictable the day may be.

"I thrive in the fast-paced nature of emergency medicine where no two days are the same," Ian said. "I enjoy the challenge of creating a stable, supportive environment for my team regardless of what walks through the door."
Ian is shaping the future of nursing by sharing his clinical knowledge with the next generation and developing streamlined processes that prioritize both patient safety and provider efficiency. He actively participates on committees and embraces new technology.

"The future lies in using smart tools to enhance patient safety while returning the 'human element' to the forefront of care," he said.

Thank you, Ian. Your compassion, vision and leadership inspire us all.
