In 2022 I was visiting my daughter and grandchildren in Georgia when I sat at her kitchen table with nothing but an idea. Together we brainstormed what later became Fortis Behavioral Health.

I wanted to create something different for Lumberton, North Carolina and surrounding areas — not a traditional agency model, but a practice built around state-of-the-art diagnostics, objective testing, and measurable outcomes. My vision was to build a place where patients could self refer and primary care providers would feel confident referring their patients, knowing they would receive thoughtful evaluation, careful medication management, and therapy supported by real data and modern tools.

At the same time, I wanted Fortis Behavioral Health to feel like home when people walk through the door. A place with warmth, comfortable spaces, a fish tank, colorful artwork, and a team that greets people with kindness and respect. Science and data guiding what we do, but delivered with the warmth and hospitality of the South.

What started as an idea has grown into a dedicated team providing medication management and therapy to individuals and families in Lumberton and the surrounding communities. We are grateful to now have two therapists, a consulting physician, a psychiatric nurse practitioner in training, and a wonderful support staff working alongside me.

Most importantly, we have been welcomed by this community in ways I will always be grateful for. Thank you to the providers who trust us with their patients and to the individuals and families who allow us to walk alongside them in their care.

This photo is my dream team. I’m incredibly proud of the work we are doing together at Fortis Behavioral Health.

Support systems matter more than we sometimes realize. 💙

Whether it’s family, friends, teachers, coaches, or your clinical care team the people around you can shape how you feel, the choices you make, and the strength you build along the way.

At Fortis Behavioral Health, we believe healing happens in connection. Our two-tier treatment team works collaboratively to ensure every patient has both medical and therapeutic support. Because no one should navigate their mental health journey alone.

If you or your child could benefit from additional support, we’re here to help. 💙

Honoring Black History Month means acknowledging how history, access, culture, and mental health intersect.

The numbers show that disparities in care still exist but so does resilience, strength, and community.

Healing is not one-size-fits-all. Culturally responsive support matters.

If you’re looking for Black-centered mental health resources, here are organizations doing meaningful work:

BEAM (Black Emotional & Mental Health Collective)

Association of Black Psychologists

Sista Afya Community Care

Access to care saves lives. Community creates healing.

If you or someone you love needs support locally, Fortis Behavioral Health is here.

If you or someone you love is struggling with body image, food-related anxiety, restriction, bingeing, or purging behaviors, know that help is available.

Compassion matters. Early support matters.

You are not alone.
