White Cane Safety Day points at a law you have probably never read. In most states a cane user has the right of way at every crossing. What a white cane means is simple: the person holding it travels with little or no useful sight, and the tip reads the ground a step ahead of each foot. You stop and you wait. At ReFocus Eye Health Lumberton, our Lumberton eye care team performs the low vision evaluation that leads to cane training. Learn how a driver should behave at a crossing.

Contact Lens Safety Month shines an honest light on three ordinary habits that decide a great deal. Sleeping in your lenses, rinsing your case under the tap, and stretching a monthly pair past its date each raise the odds of a lens related eye infection. A red, painful eye in a lens wearer is a same day call, never a wait and see. At ReFocus Eye Health Lumberton, our Lumberton eye care team looks at the cornea, the clear surface your lens rests on, and treats what it finds. Learn which daily habits carry the most risk.

World Heart Day is a fair moment to mention what an eye exam shows about your circulation. Your eyes show vessel health at the back, where the vessels can be examined directly with no scan at all. High blood pressure and diabetes can leave marks there before symptoms arrive. At ReFocus Eye Health Lumberton, our Lumberton eye care team widens your pupils and studies those vessels. We then send the findings to the doctor managing your heart. Learn how often a heart patient belongs in an eye chair.

Falls Prevention Awareness Week puts vision on the same checklist as loose rugs and grab bars. Your eyes affect fall risk in ways that are often easy to correct: an out of date prescription, poor contrast in a dim hallway, and a cataract that dulls the edge of a step. At ReFocus Eye Health Lumberton, our Lumberton eye care team measures sight, examines the lens inside each eye, and reviews how your glasses perform on stairs. Learn which parts of a home safety check depend on the eyes.

CVI Awareness Month brings attention to cerebral visual impairment. In this condition the eyes are healthy, and the brain has trouble making sense of what they send. Seeing happens in the brain as well as in the eye. Your child may miss a toy in a crowded pile, look away while reaching for it, or do better in a quiet room. At ReFocus Eye Health Lumberton, our eye care team examines your child fully and explains what that exam can and cannot rule out. Learn which behaviors deserve a closer assessment.

National Sickle Cell Awareness Month carries a fact many patients never hear: this condition also reaches the eye. It narrows the small vessels at the back, and sickle cell needs regular dilated exams because early changes there rarely announce themselves. At ReFocus Eye Health Lumberton, our Lumberton eye care team widens the pupils with drops, examines the back of each eye, and sets an interval that fits your type and your age. If treatment is ever needed, we arrange it. Learn when dilated exams should begin for a child with sickle cell.

April is Defeat Diabetes Month.

In specialty eye care, we see the downstream of diabetes every day, patients who didn't know their A1c was creeping up, or who hadn't had a dilated exam in years, sitting in our chair with retinopathy that was already advanced.

The data is sobering, but it also points at the solution:

• 40 million Americans have diabetes; 11 million don't know it yet.

• 26.4% of people with diabetes already have some form of diabetic retinopathy.

• Diabetic retinopathy is the leading cause of blindness in adults aged 20–74.

• Up to 90% of that blindness is preventable with timely care.

The gap between "preventable" and "prevented" closes when patients can move smoothly from screening to specialty care without falling through the cracks.

That's the model we've built at ReFocus: comprehensive eye exams with our optometrists and ophthalmologists at the front line, and a network of 40+ retina specialists ready to take over the moment a patient needs that level of care.

If you care for patients with diabetes, this month is a good prompt to check whether they're current on their dilated exam. We make the handoff easy on our end.

Swipe through for the full breakdown.

April is Women's Eye Health and Safety Month.

Two out of three people living with visual impairment or blindness worldwide are women, and the disparity isn't just about living longer. Even after adjusting for age, women over 75 face nearly twice the odds of legal blindness as men.

Four conditions drive most of the gap:

Dry Eye Disease / 2× more common in women (~11M vs. ~5M in the US)

AMD / Women account for ~60% of vision-threatening cases nationally

Angle-Closure Glaucoma / Female s*x is an established risk factor

Cataracts / Women have outpaced men in US prevalence every year on record

At ReFocus Eye Health, 220+ affiliated physicians across 100+ locations are committed to making sure the women in our communities are informed, engaged, and empowered to take charge of their vision at every stage of life.

This week is Parkinson's Disease Awareness Week, and for anyone working in eye care, it's worth pausing on.

Most people associate Parkinson's with tremors and movement problems. But visual symptoms are among the most common features of the disease, affecting the majority of patients and significantly impacting their ability to read, drive, and navigate daily life. These symptoms are frequently attributed to aging and go unaddressed for years.

The connection between Parkinson's and the eye runs deeper than most realize. The disease affects the retina directly, not just the brain's visual processing centers. The same underlying disease process that depletes dopamine in the brain also disrupts dopamine-producing cells within the retina itself, resulting in reduced contrast sensitivity, convergence problems that cause double vision, irregular eye movements, and a dramatically reduced blink rate that leads to chronic dry eye.

What's gaining real momentum in research is the potential for retinal imaging to serve as an early detection tool. A 2024 longitudinal study published in npj Parkinson's Disease followed 156 PD patients and found that the rate of ganglion cell layer thinning was roughly twice as high in Parkinson's patients compared to age-matched controls, and that this thinning correlated with cognitive decline over time.

Separately, a 2024 study in Frontiers in Neuroimaging found statistically significant retinal nerve fiber layer thinning that tracked directly with disease severity. A 2025 systematic review drawing on PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane databases concluded that the retina holds genuine promise as a non-invasive biomarker for both early detection and disease progression monitoring in Parkinson's. We are not yet at standardized clinical protocols, but the direction is clear.

The practical takeaway for eye care practices: Parkinson's patients benefit enormously from regular comprehensive eye exams. Identifying visual symptoms early, managing them appropriately, and coordinating with neurology leads to meaningfully better outcomes. Tools already in most of our practices, including OCT, may prove to be more relevant to this patient population than we previously understood.

The eye has always been a window into systemic health. In Parkinson's disease, the research is making that more true by the year.

This National Public Health Week, a reminder:

A routine eye exam can reveal early signs of diabetes, high blood pressure, and other systemic conditions, often before other symptoms appear.

Many serious eye conditions develop without symptoms. A comprehensive eye exam can catch what you can't feel, from glaucoma and diabetic eye disease to macular degeneration.

With 220+ affiliated physicians across 100+ locations, ReFocus Eye Health is committed to bringing preventive eye care to every community we serve.

Only 66% of diabetics received an eye exam in 2023.

A major concern when diabetic retinopathy is the leading cause of blindness in working-age adults. Diabetes also makes patients 2-5× more likely to develop cataracts and nearly doubles glaucoma risk.

This Diabetic Eye Disease Awareness Month, ReFocus Eye Health's network of 165+ ophthalmologists and optometrists across 9 states is committed to closing this care gap.
