Happy Wednesday! Let’s talk about something I didn’t think much about as a premed- the impact location can have on your practice. Speciality and practice type also plays a role and we can discuss that in future videos.

In many careers , bigger cities mean more people , and often more opportunity. However medicine doesn’t necessarily follow those same rules since essentially everyone every where needs healthcare. Often times for many specialties larger cities are more saturated while smaller or rural towns are in great need. This is not to say that the overall need for doctors regardless of city isn’t high. But it does make a difference when you’re looking at what kind of lifestyle and compensation you may desire.

This goes for anything you want to do. There are a billion reasons you can come up with for why you shouldn’t do something. At some point you have to decide what kind of life you desire and make choices based on that. Time is always ticking.

It’s been a beautiful thing to see how we’ve been able to build the oculoplastic surgery practice after several months. We’ve been performing a significant amount of in-office procedures and boosting up the aesthetic and cosmetic side. A new procedure suite is underway as well with some plans for new laser technology. Surgical cases are now booking out into mid June. Never a better time to stay focused on the prize.

**You’re the attending now.**
Residents and fellows one the best things you can do is take notes at the end of your training. Everything from types of instruments you use to scheduling flow etc. One day you’ll look up in that operating room and no one is there but you. You’re going to read a lot and come up with some of your own techniques. You’ll also have all the voices and sayings from all your past attendings stuck in your head. Kind of weird but comforting … hopefully 😂🤷🏽‍♂️.

Facts are that Black Americans tend to have much poorer outcomes than other races. A reason for this may be that Black Americans account for only 3.1% of participation in clinical trials for cancer drugs and treatments. There are many reasons for this and one that stands out to me is mistrust. This is why I am supporting The American Lung Association’s Awareness, Trust and Action campaign. Since I’m off today I figured that today’s would be about work-life balance. There are many of us in healthcare who don’t take care of ourselves like we should. I’ve been guilty of that. Make sure to make time for the things you enjoy in and outside of medicine 🙏🏾.
