June is National Cancer Survivors Month and includes Sunday, June 7 as National Cancer Survivors Day®. Both the month and day celebrate those who have fought the disease and those currently in treatment. They raise awareness of the ongoing challenges cancer survivors face and honor life. According to the latest statistics from National Cancer Survivors Day website, there are about 18.6 million people in the U.S. who are living with a cancer history. Pictured are team members from our infusion center with the infusion center’s bell. Patients celebrate the end of chemotherapy treatment by ringing the bell three times after reading the "Ring of Hope" poem. We cheer and applaud them during the ceremony!

We hosted a two-day Career Camp this week for students entering the ninth or 10th grades in the 2026-2027 school year. The camp gave students opportunities to learn hands-on about different hospital careers. St. Joseph's Hospital-North campers toured hospital departments, received presentations from hospital staff and participated in interactive classes.

Department tours and presentation highlights included: surgery, nursing simulation, pet therapy, rehabilitation, radiology, maternity, respiratory therapy, laboratory/phlebotomy, pharmacy, physician careers, facilities and nutrition/dietitian.

The St. Joseph's Hospital-North camp is part of a series of career camps across the BayCare Health System this summer in an effort to inspire the next generation of health care workers.

Abhay, who will be a ninth grader this August at Strawberry Crest High near Plant City, said he wanted to attend the Career Camp to learn more about hospitals.

"I only thought hospitals was doctors and nurses," Abhay said. "I wanted to see what's beyond that and the different things I would be able to do in a hospital."

Abhay aspires to be a surgeon and liked the camp presentation in an operating room about robotic surgery. "I didn't know that robotic surgery is sort of like a VR (virtual reality) set and that you would actually be doing the surgery and controlling the robot," he said.

See more about the robotic surgery activity in the photo gallery.

This was the first year that the camps came to our hospital and our sister hospital, St. Joseph's Hospital-South in Riverview.

Melissa, clinical professional practice manager, one of the camp organizers and coordinators, said the expansion to St. Joseph's Hospital-North and St. Joseph's Hospital-South was because of substantial community demand.

"We've been trying to expand our outreach and bring more young people into our facilities and expose them to health care careers," Melissa said. "We wanted to give more students in the geographical regions and communities across our system the opportunity to participate."

Know the B.E. F.A.S.T. stroke symptoms listed here and all can happen suddenly. Call 911 immediately. Indecisiveness about going to an emergency room during stroke symptoms or waiting even a few extra minutes could be harmful.

• F – Face, facial weakness or drooping
• A – Arms, weakness or numbness
• S – Speech, slurred speech or difficulty speaking
• T –Terrible headache, onset of a severe headache

The Fallen Soldier's Table, in our Twigs Café, is displayed for Memorial Day and was in the café leading up to Memorial Day. The table signifies emotions and feelings for those who did not return home. The table represents that they are with us in our minds and spirit. We will never forget and our eternal gratitude goes out to those who served and made the ultimate sacrifice. Included in the photos is the placard on the Fallen Soldier's Table describing the significance of each item.

Girl Scout Troop 50117 Cadettes studied robotics and visited our hospital to get a real-world demonstration of how robots are used in our surgical services. The recent visit was part of their learning to earn badges for robotics study.

We have three robots that are guided by St. Joseph’s Hospital-North (SJHN) surgeons who are specially-trained and experienced in robotic surgeries. Robotic surgeries are minimally invasive and can provide patients with smaller incisions, less pain and faster recoveries. The robots provide our surgeons superior dexterity, enhanced vision and improved surgical access compared to conventional minimally invasive surgery or traditional open surgery.

The troop donned gear and toured a SJHN operating room and got a hands-on experience with our newest surgical robot.

In addition, the troop received a video and powerpoint presentation about BayCare robot use in other hospitals and facilities. BayCare is piloting a program about using robotic devices to transport patients. Robots are also used to transport lab specimens, pharmacy products and for warehouse distribution.

“We were so impressed with the level of interest and all the questions the girls had,” said Jennifer, our surgical services director. "It was a rewarding experience for everyone.”

“Any chance we get to welcome our community into our facility for education and creative partnerships is an absolute honor,” said Mary, our hospital’s operations director.

Check out the gallery for some visit highlights. Thank you Troop 50117 for the interest in seeing us!
