Therapy Success Story: Peggy💙✨
Ms. Peggy came to Avenue at Lyndhurst following a ten-day hospital stay due to a bowel obstruction. Upon admission, she presented with a significant decrease in overall strength, stamina, and functional performance. Her greatest concern was whether she would be able to return to living independently in her own home.
Prior to hospitalization, Ms. Washington was fully independent in all aspects of daily life. She managed her personal care, housekeeping, and was actively involved in her community through volunteer work. At the time of her initial physical and occupational therapy evaluations, she was only able to ambulate 50 feet using a front-wheeled walker with contact guard assistance. Ms. Washington desired—and required—much more progress in order to safely return to her prior level of function.
Ms. Washington worked hard five days per week with Physical Therapy to improve her strength, balance, and functional mobility. She also participated in Occupational Therapy five days per week, focusing on training with adaptive equipment to achieve independence with lower-body activities of daily living, including dressing and toileting. Throughout her stay, Ms. Washington was always friendly, highly motivated, and a pleasure to work with. She collaborated well with the therapy team and remained committed to achieving her plan of care goals.
Within two weeks of therapy, it became evident to both the therapy staff and Ms. Washington that she was on a successful path toward returning to independent living. The therapy team provided education to her close family as part of discharge planning, including recommendations for necessary equipment and home modifications to ensure a safe return home. Her family worked closely with the staff and provided photos of her home to assist with final discharge recommendations.
After 19 days of skilled therapy and nursing care, Ms. Washington safely discharged home, having achieved all plan of care goals. She returned to independence with all functional transfers, activities of daily living—including her shower routine—simple meal preparation tasks, and stair navigation required to access the second floor of her home.
Ovation Rehabilitation Services and nursing staff at Avenue at Lyndhurst are proud to have been a small part of Ms. Peggy’s journey back to independent living and a high quality of life. She was a pleasure to work with and brightened every day with her positive attitude and motivating spirit💙👏👏👏
