From: Hasan Murshed MD - Radiation Oncologist
Celebrate World Lung Cancer Day with us — August 1
As a radiation oncologist and Medical Director of Hope Regional Cancer Center, I want to take a moment this August 1st to raise awareness about the leading cause of cancer deaths worldwide: lung cancer.
What is it?
Lung cancer begins when cells in the lungs grow uncontrollably, most often starting in the airways or lining of the lungs. It's broadly divided into two main types: non-small cell lung cancer (the most common) and small cell lung cancer, which tends to grow and spread more quickly.
Common causes:
🔸 Smoking — the leading risk factor, responsible for the majority of cases
🔸 Secondhand smoke exposure
🔸 Radon gas exposure in homes
🔸 Occupational exposures (asbestos, diesel exhaust, certain chemicals)
🔸 Family history and genetic factors
🔸 Air pollution
Warning signs to watch for:
🔸 A persistent cough that doesn't go away or worsens
🔸 Coughing up blood
🔸 Chest pain that worsens with deep breathing or coughing
🔸 Shortness of breath
🔸 Unexplained weight loss or fatigue
🔸 Hoarseness
Treatment options:
Depending on the type and stage, treatment may include surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, targeted therapy, or immunotherapy — often used in combination. Advances in early detection, including low-dose CT screening for high-risk individuals, have significantly improved outcomes.
If you're a current or former smoker, ask your doctor whether lung cancer screening is right for you. Early detection saves lives.
📖 I'm also excited to share that my upcoming book on stopping cancer before it starts dives deeper into prevention and early detection strategies like these. More details coming soon!
