Facts about Ectopic Pregnancy:
• How/When does an ectopic pregnancy happen?
An ectopic pregnancy happens when a fertilized egg implants outside of your uterus. The egg is meant to travel down your fallopian tubes and embed itself into the wall of your uterus, where it can develop. In an ectopic pregnancy, the egg implants in one of the structures along the way. The most common place this can happen is inside your fallopian tubes.
• How is an ectopic pregnancy diagnosed?
A urine or blood test (HCG) or an ultrasound
• How common are ectopic pregnancies?
Ectopic pregnancies occur in about 2% of all pregnancies.
• How soon would you know you have an ectopic pregnancy?
Healthcare providers usually diagnose ectopic pregnancies in the first trimester (up to 12 weeks of pregnancy).
• How is an ectopic pregnancy treated?
Ectopic pregnancy can be treated surgically or with the use of a medication called Methotrexate.
• Can an ectopic pregnancy continue?
No. Unfortunately, an ectopic pregnancy is fatal for the fetus and your pregnancy can’t continue. Once an egg implants outside your uterus, you can’t move it to your uterus.
• Can an ectopic pregnancy be fatal for the mother?
An ectopic pregnancy can be life-threatening for the mother and so must be diagnosed and treated quickly.
• Are there any current laws restricting physicians from administering treatment for an ectopic pregnancy?
No. An ectopic pregnancy requires removing an embryo to save a mother’s life so that both lives are not lost. This life-saving treatment is not prevented by any current law restricting or banning abortion in any of the 50 states in the U.S.

Despite the years, despite the added services, and the changing of the culture - those things are still an essential part of who we are and what we can and will do for those we serve.
