💜 Today in History | August 7, 1782

On this day in 1782, General George Washington established what would eventually become the Purple Heart, one of our nation's most recognized military decorations. Originally known as the Badge of Military Merit, it was created to honor exceptional service and, today, is awarded to members of the U.S. Armed Forces who are wounded or killed in action while serving our country.

The Purple Heart is more than a medal—it is a lasting symbol of courage, sacrifice, and the tremendous cost of defending our freedoms. As we remember its history, we also honor the brave men and women who have worn the uniform and paid a profound price in service to our nation.

Beat the heat and spend a little time exploring Baker County's history! Join us Saturday, August 1, from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Baker County Historical Society.

📖 Research your family history in our genealogy library, take a tour of the historic Old Jail, browse our exhibits, and discover the stories that helped shape our community.

Today in History | July 30, 1945

In the early hours of July 30, 1945, the USS Indianapolis (CA-35) was struck by two torpedoes fired by the Japanese submarine I-58 in the Philippine Sea. The heavy cruiser sank in just 12 minutes, only days after completing its secret mission of delivering key components for the first atomic bomb to Tinian.

Approximately 300 sailors went down with the ship. Nearly 900 survivors were left adrift in the open ocean for almost four days, enduring exposure, dehydration, and shark attacks before a routine patrol aircraft spotted them. Only 317 men survived, making it one of the deadliest naval disasters in U.S. Navy history.

Today, we pause to remember the courage, sacrifice, and resilience of the crew of the USS Indianapolis and honor those who never returned home.
