Emergency preparedness starts with all of us. This month, Governor Gretchen Whitmer and the Michigan State Police Emergency Management and Homeland Security Division are recognizing the professionals who work year-round to help communities prepare for, respond to, and recover from emergencies.

As part of the initiative, the Michigan State Police is launching "Ready Michigan", a new social media series featuring emergency management professionals and community partners who will share valuable preparedness tips, real-life experiences, and practical ways you can be ready for unexpected situations.

Michigan is under a statewide Air Quality Alert today and tomorrow (July 17) due to smoke from wildfires. MSHS continues to monitor the situation. All our facilities remain open, including the Mackinac Island Medical Center. Regular Clinic hours are 9am to 4pm, Monday thru Friday. Emergency services always available by calling 9-1-1. We will continue to monitor conditions closely and provide updates as needed.

*As of 10:00 a.m. Wednesday... Michigan is under a statewide Air Quality Alert due to smoke from Canadian wildfires. Mackinac Straits Health System continues to the monitor the situation. All our facilities remain open. Appropriate response measures have been initiated at our St. Ignace Campus, including ventilation management and ongoing assessments of affected areas. Additional air filtration units are being brought in. We will continue to monitor conditions closely and provide updates as needed. Those with respiratory issues should limit their time outdoors during these conditions.

As you enjoy the Independence Day holiday, please keep these important reminders in mind:

🏥 Mackinac Island Medical Center will be closed on Friday, July 3, in observance of the holiday. Our Emergency Room will remain open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to provide emergency care.

🚕 Taxi Service Notice: All taxis will stop operating on Saturday, July 4, from 9:00 PM until after the fireworks conclude.

🚑 If you experience a medical emergency during that time, call 911. An ambulance will respond and transport you if needed.

Hot and humid conditions are expected across our area through the 4th of July, increasing the risk of heat-related illness.

𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐲 𝐬𝐚𝐟𝐞 𝐛𝐲 𝐭𝐚𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚 𝐟𝐞𝐰 𝐬𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐞 𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐚𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬:
💧 Drink plenty of water and stay hydrated.
🚫 Avoid alcohol and limit caffeine, which can contribute to dehydration.
🌳 Reduce outdoor activities during the hottest part of the day.
👕 Wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothing, along with a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen.
🏠 If you begin to feel overheated, move to an air-conditioned space or find shade.
❤️ Don't forget to check on older adults, young children, and neighbors who may be more vulnerable to the heat.

A little preparation can go a long way in preventing heat-related illness. Stay cool, stay hydrated, and enjoy a safe holiday week!
