Let’s talk about s*x.

Let’s talk about teaching our children that no means no, that consent has to be given before anything happens, and that as kids they shouldn’t be engaging in s*x anyway. If someone is pushing that on them, they need to tell an adult.

Let’s have these conversations early so our children don’t become victims and our adults don’t have to live with traumatized pasts.

I’ve been sitting with the Cornell 7 news for a few days now, and I couldn’t stay quiet.

As a trauma therapist, I work with children who have been s*xually abused and adults whose memories resurface years later, sometimes decades. They come in not knowing why they can’t sleep, why certain smells or touches stop them cold, why they’ve never felt safe in their own body. The harm doesn’t end when the moment does. It follows people into their relationships, their parenting, their sense of who they are.

That’s why this matters so much to me.

Let’s be real for a second: most people don’t fail their suicidal friends because they don’t care. They fail them because nobody ever taught them how to actually show up when things get heavy.

We’ve been handed this idea that support means giving advice, offering a silver lining, or trying to fix everything right on the spot. But when someone is in a deep crisis, those clichés don’t heal. They just choke out the conversation and force people to isolate themselves.

We have to disrupt that pattern. We need to change the script to less fixing and a whole lot more listening.
