Happy July! ☀️

Can I tell you what I’ve been thinking?

We just celebrated Juneteenth.
Now we’re about to celebrate Independence Day.

Both are reminders that freedom matters.

But here’s the question that’s been sitting with me…

What do you need to be free from?

Fear?
Guilt?
People-pleasing?
Overthinking?
The need to explain yourself?
A relationship?
A version of yourself you’ve already outgrown?

Whatever it is…

Baby… let’s stop carrying it.

Welcome to the Let👏🏾It👏🏾Go👏🏾 Challenge. 🤎

Every day this month, we’ll release one small thing and make a little more room for peace, passion, pleasure, and purpose.

👇🏾 I’d love to know…

What are you letting go of?

And…

How can this community support you?

What good is celebrating freedom around us if we never experience freedom within us? IJS…🤷🏾‍♀️🤷🏾‍♀️

Someone told you at some point — probably early, probably often — that you were too much.

Too sensitive. Too reactive. Too emotional.

And you believed it. So you learned to manage: to swallow the feelings before they came out wrong, to perform calm when you were anything but, to bottle it until the bottle cracked.

Here's what I want to tell you:

You were never too emotional. You were undertrained.

Emotional regulation isn't something most of us were formally taught. We modeled it from the adults around us — and if they didn't know how to do it, we didn't learn it either.

Being overwhelmed by your emotions is not a character flaw. It's a skill gap. And skill gaps can be closed.

Therapy teaches you to work with your emotional system — not against it. To recognize what's happening in your body before it becomes a reaction you regret. To understand what your emotions are telling you, rather than being controlled by them.

You are not too much. You are someone who hasn't yet been taught what your emotional world is for.

It's for you. And it's time to learn to use it.

💬 When were you first told you were ""too emotional?"" How has that followed you?

Emotional regulation is a skill — and we can build it together. Book a session → https://shirleytherapeuticandconsultingservices.com/

Every family carries patterns.

The way conflict gets handled — or avoided. The way love is expressed — or withheld. The way emotions are talked about, or not talked about at all.

These patterns were passed down. From your parents, who got them from their parents, who got them from theirs.

Most of the time, nobody chose these patterns. They were inherited the same way you inherit eye color or a family recipe. Just absorbed, over time, without anyone ever sitting down to decide: this is how we do things here.

But here's what's different about you:

You can decide.

Family therapy is the space where patterns get named. Where cycles get examined. Where families — in every configuration, with every kind of history — decide what they want to keep and what they're ready to put down.

It's not about blame. Nobody gets to assign the trauma to one person and walk away clean. It's about understanding — together — how your family learned to love each other, and what would happen if you learned a new way.

This is for any family who wants to grow closer. Any family. Any configuration. Any story.

💬 What's one pattern from your family of origin that you're determined to change?

Fear Series. Week 5.

This week: The Freeze Response.

You know what the conversation needs to be. You've rehearsed it a hundred times. And when the moment arrives — you go completely still. The words don't come.

You know the decision needs to be made. The deadline has passed. The opportunity is closing. And you're paralyzed — not because you don't care, but because caring too much has made it impossible to move.

You know. And you can't.

That is the freeze response.

It's not laziness. It's not indecision. It's what happens when your nervous system encounters a threat — real or perceived — and concludes that the safest response is stillness. That if you don't move, the danger can't find you.

And it worked. Once upon a time, that stillness kept you safe.

But now it's keeping you stuck.

The things you've been frozen on — the conversations, the decisions, the changes you know need to happen — they're not waiting on your readiness. They're waiting on your nervous system to learn that it's safe to move.

That is absolutely learnable. People do it in therapy every single day.

Friend, meet Shon.

LaShonza 'Shon' Dozier, LAMFT works with couples and families who are trying to find their way back to each other.

She understands that the hardest conversations — the ones about trust, communication, and what we really need from the people we love — are also the most important ones.

Her sessions are a space where both partners feel heard. Not judged. Not diagnosed. Heard.

Shon sees clients via telehealth across Georgia.

Legacy is a word we throw around a lot.

But I want to ask you something more personal than legacy.

When you are very old — and the career has wound down, and the children are grown, and the titles and the roles have faded — what will you have built that is unmistakably, irrevocably yours?

Not what you built for your family. Not what you built for your company or your community or your church.

What did you build for you?

This question makes a lot of women uncomfortable. Because we were taught that wanting something for ourselves was selfish. That our purpose was always in service of something outside ourselves.

But I've watched what happens when women arrive in their 50s and 60s having given everything away — and having held nothing back for themselves.

There's a particular kind of emptiness that comes from that. And a particular kind of grief.

You are not a resource to be depleted. You are a whole person with a whole life — and you deserve to build something in it that is for you.

Purpose isn't only about what you give. It's about who you become in the giving. And whether the becoming is something you chose.

💬 What's one thing you've been quietly building for yourself — even if it's just beginning?

Your next chapter belongs to you. Let's build it with intention. Book a session → https://shirleytherapeuticandconsultingservices.com/

Men don't talk about this enough.

The expectation to have it together. To figure it out. To handle it — whatever ""it"" is — without asking for help, without showing what it costs you, without letting anyone see the parts you're struggling with.

Some of you have been carrying things for years. Decades. Things you've never said out loud to anyone.

And it's heavy.

Therapy isn't about what's wrong with you. It's about understanding yourself well enough to stop repeating the patterns that are keeping you stuck. To have the relationships you actually want. To stop managing everyone else's feelings while yours pile up somewhere you try not to look.

Men do this work. Men benefit from this work. Men come out of it more present, more clear, more connected — to their partners, their kids, their work, themselves.

The first step is often the hardest. But it's also the most important.

We work with men. We work with couples. We work with anyone who is ready to stop running from the things that are running them.

You don't have to have the right words. You just have to show up.

💬 What's one thing you've never said out loud that you've been carrying for a long time?

Therapy for men is available at STACS. You don't have to have it figured out to begin. Book a session → https://shirleytherapeuticandconsultingservices.com/

There's a generation of Black women who gave everything to everyone — and learned to need nothing in return.

If that's you: I see you.

You were the backbone. The one who showed up. The one who figured it out, held it down, and kept it moving even when you were running on empty.

And somewhere along the way, you started to believe that this — the giving, the holding, the managing — was just who you were.

But needing nothing isn't strength. It's a coping strategy. And it has a cost.

The women I work with who carry this particular weight aren't weak. They're not falling apart. They're women who have been strong for so long that they've forgotten what it felt like to be held.

Here's what I want to offer you:

You are allowed to be held.

Not because you've earned it. Not because you've finally done enough. Not because you've given enough to justify taking a turn.

Because you are a human being. And human beings need support.

Therapy is one of the first places some of these women have ever truly been asked: what do you need?

You deserve to be asked that question.

💬 When was the last time someone genuinely asked how you were doing — and you told the truth?

You've taken care of everyone else. It's your turn. Book a session → https://shirleytherapeuticandconsultingservices.com/
