💬 How is your child really feeling?

Just like we schedule regular check-ups for our children’s physical health, it’s important to check in on their mental and emotional health, too. ❤️

But sometimes, asking “How was your day?” only gets you a one-word answer. Try creating space for deeper conversations with questions like:

✨ “What was the best part of your day? The hardest part?” ✨ “What’s something that made you happy today?”

You can also encourage kids to express their feelings in ways that don’t always require talking: drawing, storytelling, play, or other creative activities. 🎨

And remember: kids learn how to handle emotions by watching us. When we model healthy emotional expression and talk openly about our own feelings, we show them that emotions are normal and manageable.

If you notice your child is struggling with emotions or behavior, you don't have to figure it out alone. Reaching out for support can make a difference. 🐾

Wondering if PCIT could be the right fit for your child? 💚

Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) is an evidence-based treatment designed to help young children and their parents build stronger relationships while learning practical skills to manage challenging behaviors.

During PCIT, parents and children play together while a therapist observes through a secure, live video feed and provides real-time coaching. You’ll learn skills you can use during everyday interactions.

PCIT can help with things like:
✨ Frequent tantrums
✨ Aggression
✨ Defiance
✨ Difficulty following directions
✨ Emotional regulation challenges
✨ Strengthening the parent-child connection

The goal isn't just fewer challenging behaviors. It's more positive interactions, stronger attachment, better cooperation, and greater confidence for parents.

If you're feeling stuck and wondering, “What do we do next?”—PCIT may be a place to start. 💚

When Is Teen Moodiness Typical—and When Should You Be Concerned?
If you’re parenting a teenager, you’ve probably wondered: “Is this just adolescence, or is something more going on?” 💭

Some moodiness, irritability, and emotional ups and downs are a typical part of adolescence. But when those big emotions become intense, painful, or long-lasting, it may be time to check in.

🚩 Signs that may cause concern include:
• Persistent or intense changes in mood
• Risky, mood-dependent behavior
• Signs of major depression
• Panic attacks or overwhelming anxiety
• Self-injury
• Thoughts of su***de

And remember: You don’t have to wait until things feel “bad enough” to reach out. If your teen’s big moods are bothering them, affecting you, or getting in the way of school, relationships, or the things they need to do, it’s worth checking in.

Sometimes, the best first step is simply starting the conversation. ❤️

💬 Reach out to a friend!

Self-care doesn’t always mean spending time alone. Sometimes, taking care of yourself means connecting with someone who makes you laugh, listens without judgment, or simply reminds you that you’re not alone. 💚

Send the text. Make the call. Grab a coffee. Even a quick conversation can help lift your mood and make a stressful day feel a little lighter.

Connection is self-care, too. 🫶

And if your teen or young adult is struggling to care for their own mental health, give us a call to see how we can support them and you.

🎵 Turn up the self-care!

Listening to your favorite music can be a simple way to boost your mood, reduce stress, and take a mental break from the day. Whether you need to dance it out, relax with a favorite song, or sing at the top of your lungs—there’s no wrong way to enjoy it! 💚

So put on your favorite playlist, turn up the volume, and give yourself a few minutes to just enjoy the music. 🎶

And if your teen or young adult is struggling to care for their own mental health, give us a call to see how we can support them and you.

📝 Put your thoughts on paper!

Journaling can be a simple way to slow down, clear your mind, and make sense of what you’re feeling. You don’t need perfect words or a fancy journal—just a few minutes to write honestly about what’s on your mind.

Sometimes getting your thoughts out of your head and onto paper is the self-care your brain needs. 💚

Grab a pen and start writing. No judgment, no rules—just you and your thoughts.

And if your teen or young adult is struggling to care for their own mental health, give us a call to see how we can support them and you.

One of the questions we hear often: "Does Miles live here at the office?"

As much as he loves greeting clients and making therapy sessions a little brighter, the answer is no! 😊

At the end of the day, Miles clocks out and heads home with Dr. Andy, where he enjoys being a regular dog: playing, going for walks, relaxing with his family, and getting plenty of well-earned belly rubs. ❤️

When he's at the office, Miles loves meeting new friends and helping children feel a little more comfortable. But after a busy day of making people smile, he's always happy to head home.

We're so grateful to have him as part of the Basset Psychological Services team and we're pretty sure he's grateful he doesn't have to sleep at work! 🐶💙
