Carrick Family Counseling, LLC

Carrick Family Counseling, LLC Licensed LPC-S NCC, serving adults working with Govt & Contract employees in N Alabama & Wash DC area

Hi, I’m Lori Carrick, LPC, NCC and let me introduce you to Carrick Family Counseling! I have been told I am warm, easy-going and approachable (…and I have a sense of humor, too). I will take the time to understand where you have been, what has and hasn’t worked for you in the past and how those things affect you now. I believe that your history is important to the extent that it impacts your choic

es today. My practice is focused on learning, insight, healing and understanding. Therapy is an interactive process that provides positive outcomes for change and growth. I use a variety of therapeutic techniques to help you reach greater awareness and stability. Whether it is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Solution Focused, Client-Focused or Emotion-Focused, each technique is used in relation to the other. I am sensitive to your concerns and will guard your confidentiality. My specialties that focus on children and adolescents include anxiety, depression, ADHD, school concerns (including IEP and 504 plans), physical/emotional abuse and custody issues. Treating children with play therapy is a special interest of mine and I work closely with parents, schools, psychiatrists and physicians to maintain cohesion within the counseling setting. Specialty areas in adult treatment include stress management, anxiety, depression, adjustment disorders, life transitions, grief, long term effects of PTSD and physical/emotional abuse and trauma. I have been working in Northern Virginia for the past 16 years. I have worked with various county school systems to include Alexandria, Arlington, Fairfax, Prince William and Loudoun Counties in Virginia. I have worked with the court systems in Alexandria and Fairfax Counties (VA) but have also provided testimony as an “expert witness” in Maryland, Virginia, Alabama, Colorado, Kansas and DC. As a former Intelligence Specialist working with the Armed Services, I have developed a strong understanding of the military mindset and have worked with soldiers and families in various aspects of transition. I have also had the opportunity to work with individuals from all levels of US Government Agencies, such as the Departments of Homeland Security, Labor, Commerce, Education, the FBI, Library of Congress and Congressional offices. I hold a Master’s degree in Community Counseling, with a clinical mental health concentration from the George Washington University in Washington, DC. I am a National Certified Counselor (NCC) and a Licensed Professional Counselor in both Alabama and Virginia, USA.

If you are feeling this during the winter, consider getting more sunlight during the day. Using your lights in the house also helps feel more energized!

If you identify as neurodivergent, you may notice that you feel tired much of the time. This can be due to constant distractions, difficulty concentrating, and overall difficulty staying organized and on task.

ADHD effects how the brain processes cognition which can lead to fatigue both mentally and physically. People with ADHD often have difficulty self-regulating their energy levels which leads to unsustainable energy expenditure throughout the day.
There has yet to be an exact explanation for the connection.
It has been hypothesized that fatigue from ADHD can be attributed to its effect on dopamine levels in particular, famously known for its role in motivation, pleasure, reward and emotional regulation. For helpful strategies, visit Skills Advocate.
