Chelsea Rochelle, equal employment opportunity specialist, was nominated for representing Madison VA at a Veteran’s funeral and burial, driving more than six hours round trip to ensure the Veteran—who had no family present—was honored with dignity.

Her willingness to undertake such a long journey underscores her deep sense of duty and her unwavering commitment to honoring every Veteran’s service and sacrifice. Chelsea demonstrated the ICARE values through her empathy, respect, advocacy and commitment to service. On this day in 1777, the Second Continental Congress passed a resolution declaring the creation and design of the U.S. flag. It proclaimed “that the flag of the United States be made of thirteen stripes, alternate red and white; that the union be thirteen stars, white in a blue field, representing a new Constellation."
May the flag forever wave over our nation, proudly protected by Veterans who have bravely fought for our freedom.

Why It’s “Women Veterans Recognition Day” – Not “Women Veterans Day”

On June 12th, we celebrate women Veterans and honor their incredible contributions, but it’s important to recognize the true meaning of the date and its official name.

June 12, 1948 marked a turning point in history: The signing of the Women’s Armed Services Integration Act granted women the right to serve as permanent, regular members of the U.S. Armed Forces. That’s why we honor Women Veterans Recognition Day.

Today, and every day, let’s celebrate service, remember history, and continue to uplift stories.

Shout out to our research team - not always seen, rest assured they constantly strive to find answers to whether a treatment works, insights into which health care services are effective, chances to test the safety and effectiveness of drugs or equipment, and solutions on how to best treat or prevent illnesses.

⭐ This May marked the 101st anniversary of VA Research
⭐ Madison VA has 70 investigators conducting over 170 projects related to oncology, endocrinology, infectious disease, chronic multi- symptom illness, aging, neurologic disorders, mental health, cardiovascular health, and behavioral interventions
⭐ Five new VA-funded projects began in early 2026 in areas of dermatology, aging, smoking cessation, and health systems
⭐ Over 350 people support the research being conducted at Madison VA, including paid VA employees and volunteers
