Our own Dr. Nicholas Kuehnel recently spoke with NBC Nightly News with Tom Llamas about the rise in serious e-bike and e-scooter injuries among kids and teens 🚲🚨🩼

At American Family Children’s Hospital, related pediatric ED visits increased nearly 5x this spring compared to last year. Higher speeds can mean more serious injuries, including head injuries, fractures, and severe bleeding.

It’s an important reminder of the role our Pediatric Emergency Medicine team plays every day in providing specialized emergency care for kids when they need it most, while helping families and communities prevent injuries before they happen.

🫁🧩 Pneumonia accounts for more than 1 million ER visits each year among older adults. Now, UW–Madison researchers are digging into underappreciated pieces of the puzzle.

With support from a new $3.2 million NIH grant, a team of researchers led by Dr. Michael Pulia is launching a first-of-its-kind study examining the link between oral health and swallowing problems as risk factors for pneumonia in older adults.

Researchers will assess patients in the emergency department using saliva tests, swallowing imaging, and other tools to catch these factors early, before treatment changes the picture.

Dr. Pulia says that understanding the synergy between these factors may help clinicians identify patients at risk for infection and reinfection sooner, support targeted antibiotic use, and connect patients with swallowing therapy or oral care before these chronic problems become life-threatening.

Congratulations to Andrea Gilmore Bykovskyi, PhD, RN, on her faculty investiture as the John and Tashia Morgridge Chair of Emergency Medicine Research at the UW School of Medicine and Public Health.

Dr. Gilmore-Bykovskyi was among 16 SMPH faculty honored at the June 24 Faculty Investiture Celebration, recognizing faculty appointed to endowed chairs, professorships and named faculty positions — and the donors and namesakes whose generosity makes this work possible.

This recognition reflects Dr. Gilmore-Bykovskyi’s national leadership in improving care and research for people living with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias, including her work to advance scientific understanding of lucidity in late-stage dementia and improve care during high-risk points in the care continuum, such as emergency care and hospitalization.

Members of the BerbeeWalsh Department of Emergency Medicine were proud to take part in Wisconsin Doctor Day, joining physicians, medical students, and health care leaders from across the state in conversations about advocacy, patient care, and stronger communities.

Dr. Collin Michels participated in a panel discussion on firearm injury prevention, including how physicians can identify people at risk, begin firearm-related conversations in clinical, and community settings, and apply consensus strategies to help prevent injury.

We were also grateful to have Dr. Kristen Mueller and PGY-2 resident Dr. Bryan An represent UW Emergency Medicine and Wisconsin ACEP at this important statewide event.

Dr. Janis P. Tupesis has been named president-elect of the International Federation for Emergency Medicine, whose member organizations represent 70 countries worldwide.

Dr. Tupesis will serve a two-year term as president-elect before becoming IFEM president at the 2028 International Congress on Emergency Medicine in Brazil. In these roles, he will help guide the federation’s work to strengthen emergency care worldwide through education, standards, advocacy, and international collaboration.

Dr. Tupesis’ election marks the latest chapter in a career focused on building emergency medicine education and systems of care across borders...
