What Would You Say to a Patient Who Is Hesitant or Nervous About Joining a Trial?
Featuring Casey Chapman, M.D. (Chief Medical Officer at The GI Alliance)

Feeling unsure about clinical trials is completely normal. In this video, Dr. Casey Chapman says patients have every right to feel hesitant, and that the first step is simply talking through what a clinical trial is and how research has changed.

As Dr. Chapman explains, the treatments being studied in GI today have advanced a great deal compared with 15 or 20 years ago. He encourages patients living with a lifelong condition to keep research in mind as an option over time. If you have questions about clinical trials, our team is happy to talk them through with you.

Global Handwashing Day: Stomach Bug and Flu Season

October 15th is Global Handwashing Day, and the timing is no accident. As the weather cools and we spend more time indoors, stomach bugs start to spread. Norovirus, the leading cause of vomiting and diarrhea in the United States according to the CDC, passes easily from hands to food to family members. Soap, warm water, and 20 seconds of scrubbing remain one of the most effective ways to stop it.

This season is also a good time to check in on your overall protection. If you live with Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, or another digestive condition, or you take a medicine that affects your immune system, ask your care team which seasonal vaccines are right for you. Our practice is happy to talk it through at your next visit.

National Liver Awareness Month: Take the Liver Health Quiz

Not every liver condition comes from alcohol or weight. Primary biliary cholangitis, or PBC, is a chronic autoimmune condition that slowly damages the small bile ducts in the liver. It most often affects women, is usually diagnosed in middle age, and may cause no symptoms early on. When symptoms do appear, fatigue and itchy skin are among the most common.

PBC can be found with blood tests, and treatment options have grown in recent years. If you want a quick check-in on your own liver health, the American Liver Foundation's liver health quiz is a good place to start. And if you are dealing with ongoing fatigue, itching, or abnormal liver tests, our practice can help you fi nd answers.

Some people have few or no symptoms when they are diagnosed, while others may experience fatigue or itching that could have many possible causes. PBC affects the s...

Episode 2: What Makes the GI Alliance Program Distinct?
Featuring Casey Chapman, M.D. (Chief Medical Officer at The GI Alliance)

Our practice is part of GI Alliance, a physician-led partnership of GI practices across the country, and that partnership includes a research program that brings clinical trials into community GI practices.

In this video, Dr. Casey Chapman explains what sets the program apart: nearly 30 research sites, active or in development, and roughly 300 clinical studies since 2021. The goal is to match new treatment options with the patients who need them.

World Mental Health Day: The Gut-Brain Connection

This Saturday, October 10, is World Mental Health Day, and it is a good moment to talk about something we see every day: your gut and your brain are in constant conversation. Stress and anxiety can show up as stomachaches, bloating, nausea, or changes in bowel habits. And the reverse is true too. Ongoing digestive symptoms can wear on your mood, your sleep, and your confidence.

Caring for one often helps the other. Regular meals, movement, sleep, and stress-management tools all support a calmer gut. If stress and digestive symptoms seem to be feeding each other, you do not have to sort it out alone. Our practice can help you understand what is going on and build a plan that addresses both.

From Clinical Practice to Clinical Research
Featuring Casey Chapman, M.D. (Chief Medical Officer at The GI Alliance)

Why do gastroenterologists get involved in clinical research? For Dr. Casey Chapman, it started with his patients. After years of caring for people with Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, he saw how few treatment options they had, and he wanted to help change that.

In this one-minute video, Dr. Chapman shares what drew him to research about 15 years ago and why he is so encouraged by the therapies being studied today. It is the first of five short videos on what clinical research means for people living with digestive conditions.

National Liver Awareness Month: Know Your Liver

October is National Liver Awareness Month. Your liver quietly handles hundreds of jobs, from filtering your blood to helping you digest food and store energy. The American Liver Foundation estimates that 80 to 100 million Americans have fatty liver disease, and many of them do not know it, because it usually causes no symptoms until damage has progressed.

The good news is that liver health is something you can act on. Knowing your risk factors, keeping an eye on weight, blood sugar, and cholesterol, and limiting alcohol all make a difference. If you have questions about your liver, our practice can help, including a quick, comfortable FibroScan that checks the liver without needles or surgery.

Come visit The Liver Center at GI Associates. Everyone needs a little TLC and you can get it here visiting our comprehensive liver center. Call 601-355-1234 or visit www.gi.md.

Where Do You See GI Research Going Over the Next Few Years?
Featuring Casey Chapman, M.D. (Chief Medical Office at The GI Alliance)

What does the future of GI care look like? Dr. Casey Chapman calls it an exciting time. He says the treatment options now being studied go well beyond what patients have had access to in the past, both for people who have not responded to other therapies and for people who have never started one.

In the final video of the series, Dr. Chapman shares why he sees research as an opportunity not only for new treatment, but for care and education too. Curious whether a clinical trial might be an option for you? Ask our team at your next visit, or give us a call at 601-355-1234. See below.
