Last week, we had the privilege of hosting Dr. Sophie Strike as our UW Ortho Visiting Grand Rounds speaker.
Dr. Strike delivered an engaging and insightful presentation, making the topic of hand and tumor pathology accessible and compelling to all subspecialties. It was especially meaningful to welcome a former Johns Hopkins co-resident to Wisconsin—an opportunity to reconnect, exchange expertise, and foster collaboration across institutions. We were grateful for the opportunity to learn from an outstanding educator and surgeon!

Feeling incredibly grateful after an amazing trip to São Paulo as an invited speaker at the Sociedade Brasileira do Quadril & ISHA Brazilian Symposium on Hip Preservation (Simpósio Brasileiro de Cirurgia Preservadora) last week. It was an unforgettable experience, and so special to reconnect with friends, meet new ones, and collaborate across borders. Amazing people, meaningful knowledge exchange, and the warmest Brazilian hospitality 🇧🇷

Earlier in April we had the honor of hosting Dr. Guillaume Girardot at UW Orthopedics/UW Sports Medicine. It was a wonderful exchange of ideas and discussion on the difference in American and French orthopaedics and treatment of joint preservation. And I was fortunate enough to then reconnect with Dr. Girardot in Vail, Colorado!

📊 New Consensus on Imaging Hip Instability
A new international Delphi consensus published in Clinical Orthopaedics and Related Research helps bring clarity to a long-standing challenge: how best to image and diagnose hip instability.
✅ Radiographs (AP pelvis, false-profile, Dunn) remain first-line
✅ MRI and CT are essential adjuncts for soft tissue and 3D bony assessment
✅ Clear diagnostic thresholds endorsed for LCEA, Tönnis angle, AWI, PWI, and version
⚠️ Less consensus for newer soft-tissue and dynamic measures (e.g., FEAR index, ultrasound)
Bottom line: Hip instability diagnosis should be stepwise, multimodal, and clinically integrated—not based on single measurements.
Proud to be part of an incredible international, multidisciplinary effort to standardize care and identify priorities for future research.

🦴 Vitamin D Matters for Athlete Health!
In our recent study of Division I collegiate athletes:
✅ 47% were vitamin D insufficient
✅ 18% were deficient
📈 Injury risk increased 13% for every 5 ng/mL drop in vitamin D

While performance and recovery weren’t associated with vit D levels, the prevalence of deficiency makes vitamin D an important consideration for injury prevention.

Grateful to be part of another outstanding Vail Hip Summit. Honored to join a world‑class faculty and learn from global leaders, including keynote speaker Dr. Moritz Tannast, live surgeon demonstrator Dr. Marc Philippon, and an incredible group of speakers curated by Drs. Philippon, Ernie Sink and Srino Bharam. From dysplasia to FAI to arthroplasty, these conversations push us all to be better hip surgeons. Already looking forward to next year. 👏⛰️🦴
