Does the type of anesthesia affect how patients do after hip arthroscopy? What we found at 2 years minimum follow up = with neuraxial (spinal) anesthesia:
- Less narcotic use, both intraoperatively and in the PACU
- Lower pain scores on PACU admission
There were no differences in complications, revision arthroscopy, or likelihood of achieving MCID on patient-reported outcomes.

I had a fantastic time last week with the University of Kentucky Orthopaedics faculty, residents and sports fellows! It was an honor to give Grand Rounds on hip preservation, lead a Stryker Sports Medicine sponsored educational lab with the UK residents and fellows, and join the department for a lively journal club. We were honored to have hosted Dr. Jeroen Verhaegen from Antwerp, Belgium at the University of Wisconsin as part of his ISHA Traveling Fellowship. We had a great few days of sharing ideas and learning from each other's approach to hip preservation. This kind of international exchange is exactly what the ISHA Traveling Fellowship program is designed to foster: connecting surgeons across borders to advance the field of hip preservation together. Grateful to ISHA — The Hip Preservation Society for making these collaborations possible, and to Dr. Verhaegen for a great week of case discussions, OR time, and conversation.

Another great American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine Hip Course in the books! 🦴 Huge thank you to our incredible faculty for sharing their time, expertise, and hands-on teaching, and to the attendees who traveled in to learn, ask great questions, and continue to learn more about hip preservation. Last week’s ISAKOS-ISHA webinar on the posterior hip addressed one of the trickiest areas in our field. But talking it out with international perspectives from some of the leading minds made it more clear. With over 600 registrants tuning in, it's clear this is a topic a lot of us globally are trying to learn more about. Grateful for the chance to learn from the people doing this work at the highest level. Still so much to learn, but every session like this helps.

Did you know? The CT scan you already get before hip surgery could double as a free bone density check. 🦴 In our new systematic review, we pooled data from 24 studies (7,000+ patients) and found that measuring "Hounsfield units" — a number every CT already produces — at the femoral neck lines up strongly with standard DXA bone density scans. We're excited to see this move orthopedic care toward simpler, more proactive bone health screening.

🎙️ Had such a great time joining Doctor Radio on SiriusXM on July 23rd to talk shop with Drs. Dan Kaplan and Ariana Lott! Matthew Kuik and I got to dig into our recently published research looking at how athlete-specific factors influence the timeline to return-to-sport clearance after hip arthroscopy in Division I collegiate athletes. Conversations like this are exactly why we do this work: bridging the gap between the research and the athletes and clinicians who can put it into practice. Grateful for the invite and for the chance to bring evidence-based sports medicine to a national audience.
