Advocacy in action!

Since March, CPP Law Fellow Gillian Shimabukuro and Health Justice Clinic Legal Advocacy Coordinator Sachin Gupte have worked alongside the Greater Wisconsin Agency on Aging Resources (GWAAR) to support older adults affected by unexpected Medicare coverage changes. Together, they helped patients navigate financial uncertainty, access medications and financial assistance, and advocate for a solution to a problem affecting thousands of Wisconsin seniors.

This month, those efforts helped contribute to a major win: significant coverage protections were restored retroactively for 8,412 Wisconsin Medicare members.

This success highlights the power of partnership. By combining GWAAR's educational and technical assistance expertise with CPP's advocacy work, organizations were able to help create meaningful change for older adults across Wisconsin.

Congratulations to Gillian, Sachin, GWAAR, and everyone involved in this important victory for Wisconsin patients. 🎉

At The Center for Patient Partnerships, students have the opportunity to create meaningful change for patients while developing skills in advocacy and health justice.

Over the past year, Ash Eisen, a recent UW-Madison Master of Social Work graduate, worked with the Health Justice Clinic to support patients navigating insurance barriers to gender-affirming care and helped develop a resource guide to empower patients in understanding their coverage options.

advocate for the new rural health insurance program. The mission of this new program is to support patients in using health
insurance and coverage to gain timely, effective, and accessible health
care in rural Wisconsin communities. The position will
coordinate this new endeavor, lead helpline intake, one-on-one consumer
education efforts and brief intervention advocacy services to qualifying
clients to support access to health care.
