UW Speech and Hearing Clinic We are the University of Wisconsin-Madison's audiology and speech-language clinic. All care is accessible, culturally competent, and evidence-based.

In 1914 the University of Wisconsin-Madison opened the first speech clinic in the country. Today, the UW Speech and Hearing Clinic (UWSHC) helps people communicate to the best of their abilities and lead fuller, more productive lives. The

audiologists and speech-language pathologists at the UWSHC offer the highest-quality evaluation, treatment, and consultation services for children and adults with speech, language, hearing, and related communication needs. The UWSHC is a teaching clinic where graduate student clinicians provide individualized service under the guidance and supervision of state-licensed and nationally certified speech-language pathologists and audiologists. The UWSHC supports equitable treatment of clients. No individual shall be discriminated against based upon race or ethnicity, nationality, religion, age, s*x, gender identity, disability, or s*xual orientation. We provide all services in a manner consistent with the American Speech Language and Hearing Association Codes of Ethics. The clinic uses a variety of assessment tools, including standardized and non-standardized tests, and procedures developed by students and faculty. When planning treatment, we keep family, caregiver, and client preferences in mind, and use an evidence-based practice approach.

This summer was one for the books! 📚💙

We had so much fun welcoming another amazing group to Storytime Friends, our story-based program for children with hearing loss.

From reading a new book each day to crafts, games, hands-on activities, and lots of play, every moment was designed to build language, listening, and literacy skills in fun, engaging ways. ✨

A huge shoutout to our incredible audiology graduate students for planning and leading such creative activities, and a special thank you to UW's McBurney Disability Resource Center for providing American Sign Language (ASL) interpreters throughout the program.

Thank you to all of the wonderful children and families who spent the week with us—you made it unforgettable! ❤️ We can't wait to see everyone again next summer!

Say hello to Ronin, clinical professor Maia Braden's adventurous 11-year-old Lab mix! 💙

When he's not taking a refreshing swim in Lake Wingra, you'll find him perfecting his favorite hobbies: napping, and counter surfing like a true professional.

This week's biggest achievement? Ronin successfully "sampled" an entire package of hamburger buns and a bag of Rollos. 🍞🍫 (We don't recommend following his example!)

Do you know a child between 7 and 17 years who has motor impairment and difficulty producing understandable speech? The WISC Lab at UW Madison, led by Professor Katie Hustad, Ph.D., is recruiting kids and teens for a new research study to help test speech strategies designed to improve intelligibility. The project is called SPEAK. The team is looking for people who have neurodevelopmental disabilities like cerebral palsy, complications of prematurity, rare genetic syndromes, brain injury, brain malformations, etc. The study is at the Waisman Center in Madison and is child focused and fun. Assessment results will be available after the study. Compensation is provided for time and travel! We’re grateful for the opportunity to partner with the Dane County Sheriff's Office for a successful and collaborative aphasia communication training.

Together, we explored practical strategies to support effective communication with individuals living with aphasia, helping build greater understanding, patience, and accessibility in community interactions.
