Tuesday Testimonial: The Best Thing That Happened This Year? Breaking Her Ankle.

That might sound crazy… until you hear the rest of the story.

One of our patients recently shared an incredible review about her experience working with Nate after breaking her ankle. Nate helped her recover, rebuild her strength, and get back to doing the things she loved.

But he didn’t stop at the ankle.

Through their time together, Nate helped her see the bigger picture of health—fitness, strength, sleep, movement, and being intentional about taking care of her whole body.

And somewhere along the way, a broken ankle became the catalyst for a completely different approach to life.

She said that breaking her ankle was one of the best things that happened to her this year.

Not because of the injury—but because of what came after it.

That’s what we mean when we talk about a whole-body approach to physical therapy. Sometimes our job is to help heal an injury. But sometimes, the impact goes much further.

We get to help people move better, feel better, become more active, and ultimately change the trajectory of their health and quality of life.

Nate, we’re proud of the way you care for your patients and the intentionality you bring to every interaction.

The goal isn’t just to add years to life. It’s to add life to those years.

That’s what Movement is Medicine is all about. ❤️

Your pre-teen daughter doesn’t just have a bad knee. 👀

As girls grow and enter adolescence, their bodies go through some pretty significant changes—including changes in hip and pelvic structure. As the hips widen and the body changes, it can also change the way forces are transferred down to the knee.

That’s why when a young athlete says, “My knee hurts,” we don’t always want to focus just on the knee.

Sometimes the key is building strength and stability at the hip to help the knee better handle the demands being placed on it. 💪🦵

These three exercises are a few simple ways to work on that hip strength and stability, and they’re especially helpful for pre-teen and young teenage girls who are experiencing some knee discomfort.

And this one actually came from a personal request—my niece’s knee was hurting, so she asked Uncle Roo for some exercises! 😂

So I sent her these three.

It’s a great reminder that the same principles we use with our patients every day at TherapySouth can also help the young athletes in our own families.

If your daughter is dealing with recurring knee pain, don’t just assume it’s something she has to “grow out of.” The right strength and movement strategies can make a big difference.

Movement is medicine. ❤️

🏀 Heel pain shouldn’t mean “just rest and stretch.”

I recently sent these three exercises to one of the kids I coached in basketball last year who has been dealing with heel pain—especially first thing in the morning and during activity.

One of the biggest misconceptions with this type of pain is that the answer is simply stretching and resting. While those things may provide temporary relief, they don’t necessarily address the bigger issue:

👉 The tendon and surrounding tissues may not currently have enough capacity to tolerate the demands being placed on them.

So instead of simply taking activity away, the goal is to gradually build that capacity back up.

These three exercises use a combination of isometric and eccentric loading to progressively challenge the calf/Achilles complex and improve its ability to tolerate the demands of running, jumping, cutting, and playing basketball.

The long-term goal isn’t just “my heel doesn’t hurt today.”

The goal is:
🏀 Run without pain.
🏀 Jump without pain.
🏀 Practice without pain.
🏀 Play the game without pain.

Rest can decrease symptoms. Loading can build capacity.

When appropriate, the answer isn’t always less activity—sometimes it’s the right amount of activity, progressed at the right pace.

That’s how we work toward getting athletes back to doing what they love. 💪

Here is a work out description: 1) heel off lunge with bounces: elevate heel drop down in a lunge maintain hold while bouncing ball side to side 2) elevated heel squats or toe squats: elevate heels and maintain while squatting 3) heel inversion heel raises: maintain pressure with inside of heels on ball for heel raises.

20-30 reps each: fatigue is the goal.

We’re excited to have Reid Fisher joining the TherapySouth team as a Physical Therapy Tech through his medical internship! 🙌

Reid jumped right in, and it didn’t take long for him to start making a difference. From working with patients to learning the ins and outs of physical therapy, he’s already bringing energy, compassion, and a willingness to serve that makes our clinic better.

We love seeing young people step into healthcare with a heart to learn and help others. Reid is already impacting our patients for the better—and helping make TherapySouth an even more impactful, encouraging, and solid place to receive care.

We’re grateful to have you on the team, Reid! Keep learning, keep serving, and keep making a difference! 💪

🏈 COLLEGE FOOTBALL IS BACK! 🏈

The season is kicking off, and apparently our clinic has a little rivalry problem… 😂

We’re proudly representing our colleges this weekend—from the big-time Mississippi rivalry of 🦈 Ole Miss vs. 🐶 Mississippi State to some of our smaller—but equally loved—schools like Mississippi College! 🏈

Because around here, we may disagree on who has the best team, the best fans, and definitely the best school colors… 👀

…but we can all agree on one thing:

We’re proud of where we came from—and we’re even prouder to serve the Mississippi communities we call home! 💙❤️

So bring on the football, the tailgates, the trash talk, and the school spirit! 😂

May the best team win… unless you went to the other school. 😉

After more than two years without a PR, shoulder pain was holding Karlie back from reaching her full swimming potential.

Using KineMotion sEMG technology, we identified muscle imbalances and scapular dyskinesia, allowing us to build a targeted rehab program. Just three months later, she returned to competitive swimming, completed her 1-mile event, and achieved a new PR. 💪
