I am going to ask something of everyone. And it is something you can do that will honestly turn the life of a young family around.

With the partnership of Metro Social Services, SAFPAW was able to move a family with 2 small toddlers out of a horrible slumlord apartment and into interim housing. They will move to a permanent apartment on 8/7. They will be paying more in rent than at the slumlord apartment, $250.00 a month more. But even subsidized housing is costing more than you probably realize. The slumlord apartment, complete with mold, rust, bugs, sinkholes in the flooring and a bathtub that was permanently stopped up came with a monthly rent of $1,000. Folks, that is what slumlords are able to command. And our subsidized housing costs for families averages around 1,250.00 a month.

Both parents work, one works nights and the other days so they can avoid childcare costs and have more time with their children. But I won’t lie, it is a struggle. However they are so committed and I have seen that in the 6 months I’ve known and worked with them.

I would like to raise $3,500.00 and put in a separate account to help them this first year. I’d like to pay the $250.00 difference each month and give them a head start this first year for their new home and new beginning. We can evaluate the progress after 6 months and perhaps help every other month.

Can you please help me raise this amount? I will be glad to show the opening balance in this account. And if we can get the commitments needed we may grow this to help others stay put in their subsidized apartments. Housing insecurity is behind a rise in family homelessness. I am asking if you will help us make a difference, one family at a time.

Scenes from our sanctuary.

Now you might notice that the front porch chairs no longer have cushions. And you might think that they would make these chairs more comfortable for both animals and people. Of course you are right. So I brought this up to Annie after she was found guilty of chewing them to shreds in spite of having multiple chew toys.

Our sweet Annie girl. Our silly dog who has finally discovered her bark. I bought her some more chew toys today. And we hope for temps that might allow for playing in the backyard or going for a walk. We cannot blame dogs for getting into mischief when they are not getting the exercise they need. I look forward to having agility training outlets when the temps are safer.

And then there is Spicer. Showing off his superb balancing skills while simultaneously napping. Cats love to show off and prove to us how absolutely superior they are to humans in so many ways.

This is our beloved sanctuary, home to some perfect cats, even if some once saw them as misfits. Once they enter the door to our place we see them as perfection in feline form.

You keep their sanctuary home safe and secure with your donations. This is where they found out all about how perfect they were. And this is where Annie discovered that she could fiercely bark, even if we all know she is selling wolf tickets. I mean even Tilly Van Gogh knows that.

And sitting on our front porch while the cats keep an eye out for squirrels and Annie wonders if chewing up the comfy cushions was maybe not the best idea is our peaceful place.

Deuce needs a foster home for about a month so his human can get himself healthy!

Deuce is 11 years, neutered and we believe UTD on vaccinations. If he isn’t he will be as well as treated with flea prevention. His human tells us he is gentle, playful, curious and calm. And that he gets along with other dogs. We do not know about cats.

We had a full day of supplies to be delivered on Saturday so after loading the van we headed out. Food for pets and people. Water. Baby wipes.

So many we serve have had their food stamps cut off and that is hurting so many people. Now I do believe that those who can should work…but we are taking that to a cruel extreme. And we are not taking into account some of the very real obstacles. The expense of child care being greater than what they would make. The shortcomings of our We Go system. I truly think one thing we could do is make the bus free for those whose income is near poverty level. But there still needs to be more routes, more direct routes and buses running later at night.

Nonprofits such as ours are trying to pick up the slack but our donations are not keeping up with the need. One of the reasons that the smaller, grassroots “in the trenches” groups like SAFPAW are so necessary is because we take our Meals Program to the streets. We don’t just hand out what was donated, we make our lunch meals and food boxes something actually good to open. Food that fits the person or family we are handing it to. It takes more of an effort but let me share something with you. We were handing out lunch meals to an encampment a few months ago and as we were leaving a dear woman I’ve known for years hugged me and told me to tell our crew that “she could always taste the love in our lunch meals”. I got in our van and tears just fell. That meant everything to me.

On Saturday one of our stops was to see Patches and J. I am so thankful they are in housing now. And sweet Patches, J reminded me of how little she was when SAFPAW had her fixed and vaccinated that first time. I told him how good she looked and how happy she was. He is struggling with his health but he is a fighter and he is not giving up. Patches just ran to see me and just wiggled herself into a pretzel from the joy of my big ole hug.

Seeing the people I love finally have something better than a tent means everything to me. That is why we hit the streets. That is why we take our programs to the people and animals we serve. We don’t sit at our desks and wait for them to come to us. We lace up our hiking boots in the winter and get our heavy duty sneakers on in the summer and we go to those we serve.

We get an enthusiastic greeting from Patches and a warm hug from J. And we are reminded every day of why we hit the streets.
