Our Clinical Director, December, partnered with the ITR Training Institute this week to lead a webinar for foster and adoptive families about understanding and treating trauma in children in the foster care system.

The webinar helped parents better understand the behaviors they see at home and gave them practical ways to respond that support healing and connection.

Children who have experienced trauma need qualified therapists, but they also need support at home from caregivers who can recognize what’s really going on beneath the surface. Healing doesn’t stop when a therapy session ends.

We’re thankful we had the chance to encourage and equip the families who attended with tools that can help them feel more confident and a little less overwhelmed as they care for children from hard places.

Alabama ranks among the highest in the nation for youth with unmet mental health needs. For foster and adoptive families, those gaps are even wider.

Kids to Love’s Mental Wellness program provides trauma‑responsive therapy to the families carrying the heaviest load, ensuring children have the support they need to grow, connect, and thrive.

This Mental Health Awareness Month, we’re closing the gap. If you need help, please reach out at hopefortrauma.org. You're not alone.

We were so grateful to receive these wonderful PaperPie books for our waiting area! Each year, Holly Keeton hosts a book drive benefiting Kids to Love, and this year, in honor of Mental Health Awareness Month, she donated a thoughtful collection of feelings-focused books for our clients and families to enjoy while waiting for appointments. These stories help create moments of comfort, conversation, and emotional learning for the children we serve.

These rooms hold so many stories of healing, growth, and hope.

From our multi-use therapy rooms for teens, children, and adults, to our newly renovated sensory room designed for children with differing sensory needs, every space at Hope for Trauma was created with care. We have play therapy rooms filled with toys and puppets for expression, calming EMDR spaces for older teens and adults, art-focused rooms with therapy tools ready for each client’s needs, and dedicated PCIT rooms where families are learning and growing together.

In just one year, with one clinician providing PCIT services, we have graduated 8 families and are currently serving 12 more, with many still waiting for care. In June, two additional clinicians will complete PCIT training so we can continue expanding our reach.

And now, we’ve officially surpassed 5,000 hours of therapy sessions provided.

That number represents children finding safety, teens discovering their voice, adults processing trauma, and families growing stronger together.

So many lives have been changed in these rooms, and we are incredibly grateful to our community and government leaders who have supported this mission and helped create spaces where healing can happen.

We had an equine therapy client who was working on their window of tolerance for different stressful situations and the different zones that our brain can move into in those situations. They picked a horse that represented each area, and tried to take that horse to its specific zone.

It's a fun exercise helping the client learn the different modes that our brains can shift into when we experience stressful moments in life. We also worked on different techniques that can move us out of our red or blue areas and back into our green areas.

One of our recent clients decided they wanted to spend their session with Honey, our Davidson Farms house dog, instead of a horse. That was the right call for them.

It’s a good reminder that there isn’t just one way this work is supposed to look. Usually it’s the horses, but sometimes it’s a dog laying beside you. We’re here for whatever helps our clients feel comfortable enough to do the work. 💜

Great way to start a Friday! Big things coming down the pipeline for our Mental Wellness service. We are getting ready to launch a ground breaking research initiative…stay tuned!
