A good income can make life more comfortable without making us financially free.

Many Psych NPs earn well but still feel unable to reduce their hours, leave an unhealthy position, or take meaningful time away.

The issue may not be how much we earn.

It may be what our income is or is not helping us build.

This week’s article explores the difference between earning a good income and creating real financial choices.

"How did you actually do it?"

That's the question I keep getting since I shared that I paid off $224,000 in debt in 22 months.

Here's the real answer, and I'm not going to pretend it was easy.

First, the debt snowball. Smallest balances first. It wasn't because it's the "smartest" math, but because I needed quick wins to keep going. Watching a balance hit zero kept me in the fight.

Second, my side hustles. Every single dollar they brought in went straight to debt. None of it touched my lifestyle.

But those two things alone didn't get me there. I picked up extra shifts on top of an already full schedule. I cut spending in ways that were genuinely uncomfortable. I delayed trips and purchases I wanted, more than once, because the debt came first.

This wasn't magic and it wasn't easy. It was a method, real sacrifice, and the discipline to point every extra dollar at it, on purpose, month after month.

Small shifts moved my finances in big ways. But there were sacrifices too. In the end, this freedom...to work when I want to, in the specialty I love, not based on the numbers (though the numbers are good!)...well, it was all worth it!

Psych NPs, if you've ever felt "successful" and broke at the same time, you're not the only one.

Back to back med checks. A caseload most people couldn't handle emotionally. Notes caught up, patients stable, license good.

And you still glance at your account and feel that little drop in your stomach.

I get it. Here's something that actually helped me: for one week, just track where your money is going. Simple. Just look and take notes.

Small shifts moved my finances in big ways. Uncertainty like this can shift too. I lived it for a while, until I decided enough was enough.

Just do this one thing for the rest of this week and we'll really another step after this.

I paid off $224,000 in debt in 22 months.

Not through willpower. Through a system.

For years I showed up every day, cared for my patients, did the work I loved. And quietly drowned financially underneath it. No one teaches us this in NP school. We learn how to diagnose and treat. Managing six figures of debt on a nurse's income? That part was on us.

So I got clear on my numbers. I made decisions from clarity, not fear. I added intentional extra income and pointed every dollar of it at the debt.

22 months later, it was gone. And I stopped taking jobs for the paycheck.

Today I work two days a week doing what I love. That's what financial freedom will do...allow you to do work that you love!

You don't need to overhaul your entire life to get unstuck. You need a path, one clear next step at a time.

Here's exactly how we walk Psych NPs through it:

1️⃣ Start with the free guide, get honest about where your money actually stands before you change anything.
2️⃣ Buy the course, turn that clarity into an actual plan built for how Psych NPs really earn and work.
3️⃣ Join the community, stay consistent with people who get it, instead of trying to hold it all together alone.

Most people don't fail because the plan was wrong. They fail because they tried to do it by themselves.

Step one is free. Link in comments if you're ready to take it. 🤍

I paid off $224K in debt as a Psych NP. Then I cut my hours to two days a week.

I'm not telling you this to brag. I'm telling you because for years, I made every decision, clinical and financial, completely alone. No mentor to call. No community who understood the specific pressure of this field. Just me, the overwhelm, and the doubt, trying to figure it all out in real time while still showing up fully for my patients.

I got through it. But looking back, I don't think I should have had to do it that way. The isolation wasn't a requirement for the outcome, it was just the only path I knew existed at the time.

So I paid off the debt. I built more than one way to earn. And eventually, I redesigned my entire practice around the life I actually wanted, instead of shaping my life around whatever was left over from work.

That's the short version. The full story is why I started The Psych NP Collaborative, so no Psych NP has to sit alone at 11pm trying to make a huge financial decision with no one to check it against.

Swipe through for the quick version, and if any of this sounds familiar, come join us. You don't have to build this by yourself. 🤍
