Labor Day started in 1894 as a nod to the American worker, the people whose sweat and hours built this country’s prosperity. There’s a whole labor movement history behind this long weekend: strikes, marches, and a hard-won fight for dignity on the job.
But today we celebrate a different kind of labor. The kind that doesn’t clock out. The kind that carries someone else’s dream for nine months and then delivers it, quite literally, into the world.
Surrogates do the most profound labor there is, and they do it as a gift. Every contraction, every appointment, every sacrifice is in service of building a family that couldn’t exist without them. That’s a workforce that deserves its own holiday!!
So this Labor Day, we’re celebrating the workers who built this country AND the surrogates who build families. Both kinds of labor deserve our respect. Both kinds of labor deserve the best possible outcomes wirh protections, safety, support, and respect.
