Water safety is an important conversation for everyone, especially during the summer months. Individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities may face increased risks around water, making preparation, supervision, and safety planning essential.

Key reminders:
• Maintain active supervision around pools, lakes, beaches, and other bodies of water.
• Stay hydrated and take breaks from the heat.
• Swim in areas with lifeguards whenever possible.
• Wear properly fitted, Coast Guard-approved life jackets when appropriate.
• Have an emergency plan and know who to contact if help is needed.

High temperatures can create serious health risks, particularly for individuals with disabilities, older adults, and those taking medications that may affect the body's ability to regulate temperature.

Key safety reminders:

• Drink plenty of water throughout the day.
• Limit time outdoors during peak heat hours.
• Use air conditioning or visit a local cooling center if needed.
• Review medication-related heat precautions with your healthcare provider or pharmacist.
• Learn the warning signs of heat exhaustion and heat-related illness.
• Keep emergency contacts readily available and check in with loved ones regularly.
• Ensure cooling systems are functioning properly before periods of extreme heat.
