Due to factors like unequal access to healthcare, people of color are more likely to face health conditions that raise their risk of organ failure. An organ transplant is often the only option for saving a life. This is why a bigger donor pool is crucial.

During National Multi-Ethnic Donor Awareness Month and every month, we are raising awareness about the need for donors from all backgrounds. Diversity matters in organ and tissue donation, and increased awareness can help more patients receive the life-saving gift they are waiting for.

Born with only one functioning kidney, Gina faced health challenges from infancy and eventually lost her remaining kidney at just 14 years old. Years later, after becoming a wife and mother, her kidney function declined rapidly, leading to dialysis and a long wait for a transplant.

Then came the call that changed everything.
Nearly two decades ago, Gina received the life-saving kidney transplant she had been waiting for – a gift she describes as her "second birthday." Every year since, she honors her donor hero and their family with a bouquet of flowers, carrying gratitude in her heart for the precious gift of life they made possible.

Because of that selfless decision, Gina has had 19 additional years to spend with her family and friends, share her advocacy for organ donation, and watch her son Daniel grow into adulthood.

Carol Joyner has seen the impact of organ donation from both sides.

When her aunt needed a kidney transplant, Carol stepped forward to become a living donor, giving her aunt the chance to continue making memories with those she loves. As the grandmother of a donor hero, she has also experienced the powerful legacy that organ donation leaves behind.

From these experiences, Carol understands the life-changing gift that organ donation is. Every registration represents the possibility of hope and lives transformed.

When someone you love needs help, there are moments that can change the trajectory of a lifetime.

For living donors, the decision to give is an extraordinary act of love, courage, and selflessness. They step forward during a time of uncertainty, creating the possibility for a second chance.

What makes living donation especially meaningful is the opportunity to witness the impact of that gift. They see loved ones regain their strength, create new memories, and enjoy more time with family and friends.

Every donor's journey is unique, but they all remind us of the lasting impact a single act of kindness can have on another life.

“We were very hopeful that even in her death, she’s making a difference. Grief without this would be so much harder.”

Chris Dawkins, dad to donor hero Brooke, and his wife Laura find comfort in knowing their daughter saved lives by being an organ donor. They have even had the chance to meet some of the recipients, and have formed a bond with them as well.
