If you think getting a MRI is going to take forever and that there are tons of steps to prepare, look below and see just how easy it is!

Patient Preparation
- Avoid drinking carbonated beverages three hours prior to a lumbar spine or abdomen exam
- Avoid caffeine the day of your appointment
- Bring your insurance I.D. card and any previous x-rays
- Wear warm, comfortable, loose clothing without metal preferred
- Brain scan patients should NOT wear eye makeup
- Bring your favorite music CD

Meet one of our Board Certified Radiologists - Dr. Thomas L. Brown, M.D.!

Thomas L. Brown, M.D., is a board-certified radiologist with specialty training in Pediatric Radiology and Nuclear Medicine. After concluding his Bachelor of Science Degree at The Citadel (1959 – 1963), a prestigious Military College in South Carolina, Dr. Brown earned his Doctor of Medicine at the Bowman Gray School of Medicine of Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, North Carolina (1963 – 1967). He then completed a year of internship with the United States Army, at Tripler General Hospital in Honolulu, Hawaii (1967-1968). Dr. Brown soon after moved to Washington D.C, and completed his residency in diagnostic radiology (1968-1972) at the Walter Reed General Hospital (1968-1971). While in Washington D.C., Dr. Brown simultaneously completed his Nuclear Medicine Residency at the Walter Reed General Hospital, and his fellowship training in Pediatric Radiology at the Children’s National Medical Center (1971 – 1972). Dr. Brown has four boys; three are physicians and one in training to become a physician’s assistant. He finds joy spending time with them.

Meet one of our Radiologists - Dr. Peter Weinberg, M.D!

Peter Weinberg, M.D. is a Fellowship trained, Board Certified Neuroradiology specialist. Dr. Weinberg received his medical degree from University of Wisconsin School of Medicine in Madison Wisconsin as well as completing his residency at Michael Reese Hospital and Medical Center in Chicago, Illinois. His fellowship training was at the Mallinckrodt Institute of Radiology in St. Louis, Missouri as well as at Washington University School of Medicine. Dr Weinberg’s career has placed him in leadership roles as; Chief of Neuroradiology Northwestern Memorial Hospital and Northwestern Medical School and Full Professor of Radiology and Neurosurgery at Northwestern Medical School.

As a leader and innovator in the field of Neuroradiology he established the first Neuroradiology fellowship program in Chicago for training the neurosurgery and neurology residents in Neuroradiology. Dr. Weinberg developed the Neuroradiology learning laboratory for the American College of Radiology used for teaching radiology residents in university and private hospitals in the U.S. and internationally.

In addition, Dr. Weinberg has worked tirelessly as Senior Editor for the American College of Radiology Neuroradiology textbooks and with the American College of Radiology Board of Examiners to ensure standards are maintained.

What is a MRI Axial Loading System and how is it different?

Standard MRI and CT scans produce diagnostic imaging of the patient while resting in the recumbent or horizontal position. Due to this positioning of the body, the effect of gravity upon the spinal cord is not accounted for in the normal imaging procedure. The Axial Loading System incorporated into MRI scans solves this issue by introducing an axial load that replicates the natural effects of gravity on the body and can even reproduce a situation similar to what occurs to the spine when lifting a weight. The purpose of the axial loading system is to help doctors acquire a more accurate diagnosis of a patient's condition and thus offers more effective treatment options. The axial load simulating gravity gives spine surgeons the most precise picture of the patient's spine condition. It also provides them with more appropriate treatment and surgery options. This will supply dramatic information for those patients that have ongoing back pain, have had a normal MRI, yet continue with back pain only, and/or leg pain additionally.
