It’s feels good to hear our kids singing together in the garage as we lay in bed. We are fortunate that they are so supportive of each other. I believe this is “Reckless Love” by Cory Asbury.

Why does sciatica affect one leg? The vast majority of leg symptoms only affect one leg. Why is this? It goes back to flaws in human anatomy. There is a ligament that runs down the length of the spine and its job is to separate the discs from the spinal cord. It is called the Posterior Longitudinal Ligament (PLL). It is a very strong ligament; however, when it gets to the lumbar spine it becomes more narrow. This is unfortunate because this happens to be where the forces of leverage on the spine are most concentrated. This is why the lower three discs in the spine are the most common to injure. Equally as unfortunate…this is where the nerves to the legs start.

When a person bends and twists, strong forces push the lowest discs to the side, which is where the PLL is thin. This can cause a disc bulge or tear that pressurizes the nerve, causing muscle or sensory loss. If the disc injury is affecting both legs, you know the injury is severe because it was able to push directly through the PLL. This may cause complete loss of leg function, loss of bladder function, and/or loss of bowel function. This can require an emergency surgery.
Most disc injuries are treatable. We use traction (decompression) and therapeutic ultrasound for this. The primary goals are to reduce swelling, reduce muscle spasm, and increase mobility. Most people improve in symptoms when these goals are reached. Please contact us if you need help with your sciatica! Our phone number is 316-729-2528.

Joint Pain and Therapeutic Ultrasound: Its been around for decades. However, despite its effectiveness, its not used by many doctors for one reason - It is inexpensive. What is it? It is similar to the device that is used for imaging during pregnancy, but on steroids. The head of an ultrasound device has a high power, high frequency pulse. The standard setting is at 1 million pulses per second, but many doctors use it at 2 million pulses per second! At this speed, water placed on the ultrasound head vaporizes! When the head of an ultrasound device pulls away from water at such speed it causes a cavitation that instantly converts the liquid water to a gas.

What does this mean for the human body? When applied to swollen, inflamed tissue it promotes reduction of the inflammatory fluids and improves vascular flow through the tissue. This helps speed up the recovery process. The most common conditions ultrasound is used for are neck pain, back pain, headaches, knee pain, and plantar fasciitis. We even have a small ultrasound head that is designed to treat pain and inflammation in the TMJ (jaw) joint.

Ultrasound typically costs around $20. If you have questions about this type of treatment, feel free to call us at 316-729-2528. We are happy to help!

We are second generation chiropractors. Dr Ian’s dad is a retired chiropractor, along with 5 of his brothers and 10 from the next generation. That’s 16 chiropractors in just two generations! Thanks to AI, we can now see what we would be like as Dr Ian and Dr Kamra in the booming 80s of the first generation. Ha! 😂

What is the Shockwave Hype? If you have had joint pain, your phone has probably picked this up and you’ve seen advertisements for shockwave therapy. What is this therapy, and how is it different than what’s already around?
Shockwave therapy uses mechanical pulses to promote healing and circulation throughout a soft tissue. How is this different than ultrasound? Truthfully, it’s not. Ultrasound is also a mechanical wave; but it’s at a higher frequency, which cannot be heard by humans.
The question we need to ask is which frequency is better? Inflammation causes water accumulation in a given space. Water has a unique property that happens as it is introduced to a frequency of 1,000,000 Hz….which is that it vaporizes. Shockwave therapy does not approach this level.
Even though shockwave is not high frequency, it is strong. It does pe*****te a little more than ultrasound. However, most soft tissue is reached by ultrasound. Also, the shockwave power is diminished as it goes deeper into tissue.
So, which is better for soft tissue therapy? Both have their advantages in treatment. However, there is one big consideration, and that is the cost. Unfortunately, existing technologies are modified every few years and marketed as something totally different in nature….and at a higher cost.
A great example is lumbar traction. It’s been around for decades. Around the year 2000 these devices were no longer controlled by relays and big motors. They were run by microchips and stepper motors. The therapy was virtually the same, just more refined. Someone got the idea to brand the new version under the name “Decompression” and began selling packaged treatments for thousands of dollars.
The same is true for shockwave. It works. However, adding a blue LED and changing the frequency of the treatment head does not mean a $2,000 shockwave treatment package is necessary. The reality- the same number of ultrasound treatments can cost $200 and is covered by insurance.
We have performed affordable therapeutic ultrasound on thousands of people, over many decades. If you are looking into shockwave or ultrasound therapy, please give us a call! We would love to help! 316-729-2528
