Last week I went to what was probably the greatest yoga class of my life. It was one of those evenings where I could feel my body begging to go so I made the journey across Los Angeles to West Hollywood to get to my mat at 5:30, which is really saying something. My teacher opened with one simple phrase, “you are capable of doing hard things.” She spent the class repeating this statement over and over again and I made the choice to listen. You can do everything right, set any intention, but the reality is life will get hard sometimes and you are capable of handling it. Fear will always creep up, sadness will come, and there will always be a giant mountain to climb. On top of that it seems like God in all his humor gives us these battles in the most inconvenient timing possible. Your bank account is low, so your car decides to break down. You’ve had a horrible day at work, so your friend decides to call you and pick a fight. You meet someone to fall in love with, but they’re not ready to meet you half way. These battles are a reality. You can’t choose your timing, but you can choose how you’re going to deal with it. When a road block comes are you going to drive through it or turn back around? It’s a new year and it seems like everyone I know is setting beautiful resolutions for the year. It’s an amazing thing to desire change and growth, but old patterns will reappear in your life if you haven’t learned what you were supposed to be taught. The problem is most of the time we choose to run away from the lesson. We bolt the second it becomes overwhelming. We’re afraid of being inconvenienced. If you’re not testing your limits, you’re not growing. Real growth requires embracing the uncomfortable. In fitness our body craves being pushed out of its comfort zone So our muscles can tear, repair and grow. You can’t do the same thing every day and expect real growth to happen. It’s the same thing with our spirit. We Tear, We Repair and if we push through, We Will Grow. It’s that simple. You are already perfectly capable. You have always been enough. And you are capable of doing difficult things.
