“There are a lot of people who, after their surgery, say ‘I have never seen this well in my entire life,’” says Jeffrey D. Young, MD, an ophthalmologist with University of Vermont Health. He says he hears reactions like this frequently from patients after cataract surgery.

Dr. Young says it’s easy in the beginning to mistake the signs of cataracts for regular aging. To learn the difference, visit the link in the comments.

Not long ago, measles had become so uncommon in the US that many doctors had never treated a case.

Today, measles cases are at their highest level in 25 years and are being driven in part by vaccine misinformation and mistrust.

Back-to-school help is here!

Tomorrow, Malone Central School District students in Pre-K through 12th grade and their families are invited to the Back-to-School Shopping & Community Event at Malone Middle School from 12–6 pm.

This event is a true community effort, and we’re so grateful to everyone who helped make it possible! A special thank-you to Devan Monette of Malone Ford, Amanda Bashaw of Ellis Automotive and Carrie Marshall of Bokie's Drive In for their generous donations of clothing and school supplies. We’re also grateful to Katlyne Rooney of Malone Central Schools, who helped bring our community partners together, and to our own staff who collected, organized and prepared donations for tomorrow’s event.

We’re thankful, too, for the support of the Rotary Club of Malone, NY, Malone Federation of Teachers and Gadway’s Rubbish Removal and CSEA. It takes a community to make a difference, and this community showed up for local students!

Tomorrow, students can choose from free gently used clothing, backpacks, hygiene products and school supplies to help them head back to school prepared, confident and ready to learn. Families can also connect with local organizations offering information, resources and support for our community.

We hope to see you there!

High blood pressure is often called the “silent killer” because it can damage the body for years without obvious symptoms.

Many people know hypertension can affect the heart. But did you know that, over time, high blood pressure can affect the brain, kidneys, eyes, arteries, metabolism and even how well the body functions with age?

Rony Lahoud, MD, a cardiologist at University of Vermont Health, explains why blood pressure is not just a number and why knowing your numbers, following up with your care team and treating hypertension early can make a meaningful difference.

“It is not merely a numbers problem,” says Dr. Lahoud. “It is truly a chronic vascular injury syndrome.”

Mental health challenges during pregnancy often go unseen, but they’re much more common than most people realize.

From past trauma to difficult birth experiences, these moments can shape parents and families in lasting ways.

As clinical psychologists with UVM Health, Dan Mitchell and Courtney Fleisher are helping lead a shift toward more open conversations in perinatal mental health, earlier care and stronger support systems for parents and families.

“People don’t enter pregnancy as blank slates,” says Dan Mitchell, a clinical psychologist at Central Vermont Medical Center family medicine.

“Many people are already carrying stress, trauma histories or difficult relationships that can intensify during pregnancy and early parenthood. That understanding is reshaping how we support individuals and families with perinatal mental health care.”
