Your hip arthritis may have started as a movement habit.
This is not speculation. It is what the research shows.
Studies reviewed by the Gray Institute demonstrate that proprioceptive neuropathy — a degradation of the joint’s sensory nerve function — precedes osteoarthritic changes in the hip.
The sequence goes like this:
Restricted motion → sensory nerve endings in the joint stop firing (they’re never challenged through their full range) → muscle timing and response degrade → altered, repetitive loading patterns develop → localized cartilage stress accumulates over years → degenerative changes appear on an X-ray.
By the time someone is diagnosed with hip arthrosis, the movement restriction that started the process may have been building for a decade or more.
Gary Gray called this the “functional attractor well” — a restricted movement pattern that grooves progressive degenerative change into the joint surfaces over time.
A hip hinge cue, trained for years, is exactly this pattern. Not dramatically. Not painfully — at first. Silently. Progressively. Over thousands of repetitions.

Here’s the irony behind the most common glute cue in fitness:
The hip hinge is almost always sold as the movement that “activates your glutes.”
But the gluteus maximus does not operate primarily in the sagittal plane.
Its fiber architecture is oriented to produce extension and external rotation simultaneously — and it gains its mechanical advantage through eccentric lengthening across the transverse and frontal planes during the loading phase.
To fully load the glute, you need internal rotation, adduction, and flexion occurring simultaneously at the hip.
A rigid sagittal hinge gives you flexion. And nothing else.
You are asking the body’s primary power source to fire at roughly one-third capacity — and then wondering why performance plateaus and injuries persist.
Gary Gray said it plainly: “If there ever was a neuromusculoskeletal brain in the body, it’s the butt.”
The glute is designed to be the motor. But it has to be loaded before it can fire. And loading it requires the three-dimensional freedom the hinge cue explicitly prevents.

The hinge cue uses one.
A door hinge is designed to move in exactly one direction along exactly one axis. One plane. One motion. That is a perfect design — for a door.
The hip joint is a ball-and-socket with the capacity to flex, extend, adduct, abduct, internally rotate, and externally rotate — simultaneously, in constantly shifting combinations, in response to gravity, ground reaction force, and momentum.
When you lock the pelvis and force a sagittal-only hinge, you eliminate two-thirds of that system before the movement even begins.
Dr. Gary Gray, PT — founder of Applied Functional Science — called the hip “the epitome of a tri-plane joint” and “the power source of the body.”
A power source with six degrees of freedom does not need to be reduced to one.
It needs to be educated to use all six.

Muscle Function – It Depends

Here's a truth that changes everything about how we approach rehab and training:

A muscle's action is NOT determined by anatomy alone.

For 30 years, biomechanical researchers (Zajac & Gordon at Stanford) have shown that the same muscle can perform completely different actions depending on your body position, the task you're performing, how your joints interact, and external forces such as gravity and ground reaction forces.

Let me give you a real example:

The gastrocnemius (calf muscle). Anatomy textbooks say it plantarflexes the ankle. Simple, right?

But here's what actually happens in your body:
• Knee extended? It plantarflexes the ankle.
• Knee flexed at 90 degrees? It can STILL plantarflex the ankle—OR flex the knee—OR even dorsiflex the ankle.

Same muscle. Three completely different actions. All is determined by position and task.

Here is the assumption underneath almost every flexibility program ever designed:

Tight muscles are short muscles. Short muscles need to be stretched longer. Stretch them enough times, and you’ll have flexible muscles.

It’s a clean, mechanical story. It also explains why so many people stretch consistently for months and never seem to get meaningfully more flexible — or why they gain range in a session and watch it disappear by the next morning.

Most programs chase the "perfect" movement pattern. But Glasgow et al. (2012) in the British Journal of Sports Medicine says the real driver of injury prevention is **adaptability**—your ability to respond flexibly to unpredictable demands.

Every powerful movement has a critical moment—the Transformational Zone, where loading transitions to explosion.

Recent sports science research proves: athletes who excel in this transition are faster, more powerful, and less injured.

THE RESEARCH:
A 2024 study in the Journal of Sports Science & Medicine found that eccentric loading capacity (deceleration ability) is the primary predictor of acceleration and change-of-direction speed.

Another study showed eccentric training significantly enhances sport-specific movement speed and deceleration—more effectively than concentric-only training.

THE KEY FINDING:

🧠 When Dinosaurs Taught Us How Bodies Really Work

Here's a story that changed everything. In the 1970s, orthopedic surgeon Dr. Stephen Levin stood in front of a 90-foot Diplodocus skeleton at the Smithsonian and realized something was wrong.

The Newtonian model of movement—the one taught in medical school—said that bones act like rigid levers connected by joints. Simple. Mechanical. But mathematically impossible for a dinosaur that massive. If the Newtonian model were true, that creature's head would just flop around like "a coconut attached to the end of a fishing rod." It couldn't lift its head. It couldn't move.

So Dr. Levin did what great scientists do: he questioned the model.
