Some of us work the event, and some of us win it! 🚵🏆

On Saturday, our team was proud to support the 8th Annual Pedalpalooza at Canyon Lodge. Chelsea Brown, PA-C, Sarah Lang, AT, and Kathleen Hopps, EMT staffed the medical tent, helping keep riders safe throughout the day.

Mammoth Orthopedic Institute and Mammoth Hospital are pioneering the use of a breakthrough technology called the BEAR® Implant to treat anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tears, one of the most common knee injuries in the U.S.

The BEAR Implant is the first innovation in ACL tear treatment in more than 30 years. It is the first FDA-approved medical technology to enable healing of a torn ACL. This new approach is a shift from the current standard of care, reconstruction, which replaces the ACL with a graft.

Every year, approximately 400,000 ACL injuries occur in the U.S. A torn ACL does not heal without treatment, resulting in ACL reconstruction being one of the most common orthopedic procedures in the U.S. Yet the procedure has drawbacks; some procedures require two separate incisions, and some people who undergo reconstruction are unable to return to the same level of daily activities or sports.

There are several advantages to restoring a ligament rather than replacing it, and this exciting medical technology is the first to enable the body to heal its own torn ACL while preserving natural knee anatomy.

📢 Applications are now open for the 2026–2027 Mammoth Orthopedic Sports Medicine Research Fellowship!

The Mammoth Orthopedic Sports Medicine Research Fellowship is a unique one-year volunteer opportunity (August 1 – August 1) for motivated first- and second-year medical students to gain immersive, hands-on experience in orthopedic sports medicine research.
Fellows will work closely with our orthopedic sports medicine fellow and faculty on active research projects, with the goal of producing at least one peer-reviewed publication while contributing to meaningful longitudinal studies.

Program Highlights:
🔹 One first-year and one second-year medical student selected each year
🔹 Structured mentorship from leading orthopedic sports medicine surgeons and researchers
🔹 Opportunities to present and publish research
🔹 Potential for a second year based on performance and merit
🔹 Ideal for students interested in careers in orthopedics or sports medicine

Join us in wishing Dr. Kyle Minkel a heartfelt farewell as he completes his Orthopedic Fellowship with Mammoth Hospital and Mammoth Orthopedic Institute.

Over the past year, Dr. Minkel has been an invaluable part of our team, providing exceptional care to our patients while demonstrating a passion for learning, collaboration, and excellence in orthopedic medicine. We are grateful for the dedication, professionalism, and compassion he has brought to our organization and our community.

We also want to extend our sincere thanks to Dr. Minkel's wife and children for sharing this important chapter with us. Fellowship is a journey that involves the support of an entire family, and we appreciate the sacrifices and encouragement that made this achievement possible.

Dr. Gilmer’s focus is on arthroscopic and open surgery of the knee. He is an expert in knee preservation and non-arthroplasty (joint replacement) treatments for knee tendons, ligaments, and bones.

He works with academic institutions, industry, and peers to generate cutting-edge research, develop new techniques, and teach students and surgeons to advance the field of knee surgery.

Dr. Gilmer is a diplomate of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery (ABOS). He is also an active member of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons (AAOS), the Arthroscopy Association of North America (AANA), and the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM). He was designated as a distinguished arthroscopic leader (DAL) by the Arthroscopy Association of North America (AANA).

This weekend, Dr. Karch graduated with Distinction from the Harvard Business Analytics Program, an innovative collaboration between Harvard Business School, the Harvard John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, and the Faculty of Arts and Sciences.

Over the past two years, while continuing to care for patients and perform surgery, Dr. Karch dedicated countless hours to advancing his knowledge of business analytics, data science, and the rapidly evolving fields of generative and agentic artificial intelligence.

His commitment to lifelong learning reflects the same philosophy he brings to patient care every day: never stop improving, never stop asking questions, and always look for better ways to serve patients.

Dr. Brown specializes in reconstructive, traumatic, and microsurgical upper extremity problems. He has also been an active member of the Scripps Memorial Hospital, La Jolla Orthopaedic Trauma team for over two decades, treating fractures, nerve, tendon, and arterial injuries throughout the body. Dr. Brown pursued his orthopedic training at the University of California, San Diego, and completed his Hand and Upper Extremity fellowship at Harvard, Massachusetts General Hospital. In addition to a busy clinical practice, he continues to serve in multiple leadership roles in the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and the American Society for Surgery of the Hand.
