Why Aren't You Exercising?
It's a simple question, but it deserves an honest answer.
Most people will tell you they want to live longer, stay independent, play with their grandchildren, travel, or avoid becoming a burden to their family. They genuinely believe those things matter.
But then another question follows...
If your health is truly important, why aren't you exercising?
This is where psychology gives us an interesting answer. It's called cognitive dissonance—the mental discomfort we experience when our actions don't match our beliefs.
For example:
"I know exercise is important..."
"I know I need to lose weight..."
"I know I should get stronger..."
Yet days, weeks, months, and sometimes years pass without taking meaningful action.
There is another word that matters here: integrity.
Integrity isn't just about keeping promises to other people. It's about keeping the promises you make to yourself.
Every time you say, "I'll start Monday," "I'll go tomorrow," or "I'll begin next month," and don't follow through, you slowly begin to lose confidence in your own word.
The good news?
You don't need to become a marathon runner or spend hours in the gym.
You simply need to begin.
As a NASM Certified Personal Trainer, Senior Fitness Specialist, Corrective Exercise Specialist, and Wellness Coach, I've worked with many people who believed they were "too old," "too out of shape," or "too injured" to exercise. The truth is that almost everyone can do something. The key is finding the right starting point.
Exercise isn't about perfection. It's about creating alignment between what you say is important and what you actually do.
So today, ask yourself one question:
If I truly value my health, what small action can I take today that proves it?
Your future self will thank you.
If you're over 55 and aren't sure where to begin—or you're dealing with arthritis, joint pain, surgery recovery, or simply haven't exercised in years—I'd be happy to help you discover what you can do safely and confidently.
"What's the biggest obstacle keeping you from exercising?
