Cognitive Dissonance, Physical Inactivity, and the Growing Culture of Disengagement There may be few areas of modern life where cognitive dissonance is more obvious than exercise. Ask almost anyone whether exercise is good for them, and the answer will be yes. People understand that regular physical...

I Have Spinal Stenosis—But I'm Not Giving Up Movement

I know firsthand how frustrating spinal stenosis can be.
Walking can hurt. Standing can become uncomfortable. Pain can travel through the buttock and into the leg. And eventually you may start thinking: “Maybe I should just stop.”

That's exactly the trap I want to avoid.
When pain causes us to become sedentary, we begin losing muscle strength, cardiovascular conditioning, balance and eventually independence.
That's why managing stenosis isn't only about reducing pain. It's also about maintaining function.

For me, that means continuing to move within reasonable limits.
✔️ Walking in manageable intervals
✔️ Strengthening the muscles supporting the spine
✔️ Strengthening the hips, glutes, core and legs
✔️ Using appropriate resistance and progressive loading
✔️ Maintaining mobility with appropriate stretching
✔️ Using alternatives such as a recumbent bike when walking is difficult
✔️ Discussing treatments such as physical therapy or epidural injections with healthcare professionals when appropriate

I'm especially passionate about strength.
A painful back shouldn't automatically become a back that is never challenged. Avoiding resistance indefinitely can allow the muscles supporting the spine and pelvis to become weaker.

The goal is not reckless heavy lifting.
The goal is appropriate loading and gradual progression.
The same applies to walking. I don't believe every sensation of discomfort means we should immediately give up activity.

Sometimes I need to walk, rest, recover and walk again.
There are important exceptions. New or worsening weakness, major numbness, loss of coordination, saddle-area numbness, or bowel or bladder changes require medical attention. Severe or rapidly worsening symptoms are not something to simply push through.

But I refuse to allow fear of discomfort to make me sedentary.
I have spinal stenosis.
It may change how I exercise.
It may change how far I walk at one time.
It may require treatment and modification.
But I'm going to keep moving.

Because ultimately, I'm not exercising simply to have stronger muscles.
I'm exercising to maintain my independence.

Just because you're playing Pickleball doesn't mean you're training your body for Pickleball.

The quick starts and stops, side-to-side movements, lunges, reaching overhead, and sudden changes in direction place tremendous demands on your muscles, bones, joints, tendons, and balance. Without proper strength and mobility, your risk of pulled muscles, tendon strains, falls, fractures, and joint pain increases significantly.

The good news? Many of these injuries can be prevented.

As a NASM Certified Personal Trainer, Corrective Exercise Specialist, and Senior Fitness Specialist, I help active adults build the strength, stability, flexibility, and balance they need to stay on the court—and enjoy the game for years to come.

Together we'll strengthen the muscles that matter most for Pickleball:
✅ Legs for quick movement and power
✅ Core for balance and stability
✅ Hips and glutes for lateral movement
✅ Shoulders and arms for stronger, safer shots
✅ Ankles and knees for better control and injury prevention

Don't wait until an injury sidelines you.

If you're playing Pickleball, train specifically for Pickleball. Your body will thank you.

📞 Contact Be Simply Fit LLC today to schedule your personal assessment. Whether you're new to the game or play several times a week, I'll help you become stronger, move better, and reduce your risk of injury—so you can spend more time enjoying the sport you love.

Lower Back Pain? Sciatica? Spinal Stenosis? I Understand...Because I'm Living It Too.

If you're struggling with lower back pain, sciatica, or spinal stenosis, you know how frustrating it can be. Some days the pain is manageable. Other days, it seems to dictate everything you do.

I understand because I've been there myself.

As a NASM Certified Personal Trainer and NASM Corrective Exercise Specialist (CES), I not only have the professional training to help people move better—I also know firsthand what it's like to search for relief. Like many of you, I've worked through back pain and learned that the right exercises, performed consistently and correctly, can make a tremendous difference.

The corrective exercises I perform regularly have provided me with meaningful relief—without relying solely on medication. While everyone's condition is different and exercise isn't a cure, the right movement can often reduce pain, improve mobility, and help you regain confidence in your body.

If your physician or physical therapist has already given you exercises to perform, I can help you:
✔ Learn proper technique.
✔ Stay accountable and consistent.
✔ Progress safely at your own pace.
✔ Build strength and confidence without aggravating your condition.

Sometimes the hardest part isn't knowing what to do—it's continuing to do it correctly, week after week. That's where I can help.

You don't have to go through this journey alone.

If you'd like to learn how corrective exercise may help you move more comfortably and confidently, send me a message. I'd be happy to talk with you about your situation.

The Best Personal Trainers Don't Start with Weights—They Start by Listening

When you choose a personal trainer, you're not just choosing someone to count your repetitions. You're choosing someone who takes the time to understand you.

Every person who walks through my door has a different story. Some are recovering from surgery. Others are dealing with arthritis, osteoporosis, balance issues, or simply want the confidence to keep up with their grandchildren. Many have never exercised before.

That's why the first step isn't lifting a weight—it's listening.

I believe in understanding your goals, your concerns, your limitations, and your dreams. Together, we create a realistic plan that fits your life, not someone else's.

My background as an educator and teacher has taught me that no two people learn the same way. My experience working with both young people and older adults, combined with my certifications as a NASM Certified Personal Trainer, Senior Fitness Specialist, and Corrective Exercise Specialist, allows me to meet you where you are and safely help you move toward where you want to be.

Fitness isn't about perfection. It's about progress.

Whether your goal is to:
✅ Walk without pain
✅ Improve your balance
✅ Build strength after retirement
✅ Recover from an injury
✅ Increase your energy
✅ Stay independent for years to come
..you deserve a trainer who listens first and coaches second.

If you're looking for personal attention, realistic goals, and someone who genuinely cares about your success, I'd be honored to help.

Your journey is unique. Your training program should be too.

Why Aren't You Exercising?

It's a simple question, but it deserves an honest answer.

Most people will tell you they want to live longer, stay independent, play with their grandchildren, travel, or avoid becoming a burden to their family. They genuinely believe those things matter.

But then another question follows...

If your health is truly important, why aren't you exercising?

This is where psychology gives us an interesting answer. It's called cognitive dissonance—the mental discomfort we experience when our actions don't match our beliefs.

For example:

"I know exercise is important..."
"I know I need to lose weight..."
"I know I should get stronger..."

Yet days, weeks, months, and sometimes years pass without taking meaningful action.

There is another word that matters here: integrity.

Integrity isn't just about keeping promises to other people. It's about keeping the promises you make to yourself.

Every time you say, "I'll start Monday," "I'll go tomorrow," or "I'll begin next month," and don't follow through, you slowly begin to lose confidence in your own word.

The good news?

You don't need to become a marathon runner or spend hours in the gym.

You simply need to begin.

As a NASM Certified Personal Trainer, Senior Fitness Specialist, Corrective Exercise Specialist, and Wellness Coach, I've worked with many people who believed they were "too old," "too out of shape," or "too injured" to exercise. The truth is that almost everyone can do something. The key is finding the right starting point.

Exercise isn't about perfection. It's about creating alignment between what you say is important and what you actually do.

So today, ask yourself one question:

If I truly value my health, what small action can I take today that proves it?

Your future self will thank you.

If you're over 55 and aren't sure where to begin—or you're dealing with arthritis, joint pain, surgery recovery, or simply haven't exercised in years—I'd be happy to help you discover what you can do safely and confidently.

"What's the biggest obstacle keeping you from exercising?

Most people think a personal trainer's job is to count reps, design workouts, and tell clients what to eat.

The truth is, that's only a small part of the job.

A great personal trainer is really a behavior change coach.

Exercise isn't just about muscles—it's about habits. Nutrition isn't just about food—it's about the decisions we make every single day. Lasting health comes from changing the behaviors that shape our lives, not from following another short-term diet or exercise challenge.

As a trainer, my role is to help people identify what has been standing in their way. Maybe it's years of failed attempts. Maybe it's fear of getting hurt. Maybe it's believing they're "too old" to start. Maybe life has simply gotten in the way.

Together, we work to replace those limiting beliefs with healthier routines, greater confidence, and realistic goals that can actually be sustained.

Small, consistent changes create remarkable results.

Choosing to walk instead of sitting.
Adding strength training twice a week.
Eating one healthier meal each day.
Getting better sleep.
Managing stress before it manages you.

These simple habits don't just help you lose weight—they help you build a longer, healthier, and more independent life.

As we age, our goal shouldn't simply be to add years to life. It should be to add life to our years.

If you're looking for someone to simply count your repetitions, there are plenty of trainers who can do that.

If you're looking for someone to help you change the behaviors that determine your health, energy, independence, and quality of life for years to come, that's where I can help.

Your future health is built by the choices you make today.

What is one small habit you could change this week that your future self will thank you for?

Let's get started today, Jim
