It’s a beautiful, golden August afternoon, but you can’t help feeling a heavy sense of "blues" because you know summer is winding down. 🌅🌾📉
If you’ve ever felt like the middle of August feels more like a "loss" than a transition, you aren't being "dramatic." You are experiencing a very real clinical phenomenon: Anticipatory Grief.
What is Anticipatory Grief? 🧠
Most of us think of grief as something that happens after a loss. However, the human brain is a "prediction machine." When we see the shadows getting longer and the "Back to School" ads hitting the stores, our nervous system begins to mourn the loss of daylight, freedom, and the relaxed pace of summer before it actually ends.
Why it feels so heavy:
This state of "waiting for the other shoe to drop" keeps your body in a low-level state of "Fight or Flight." Instead of enjoying the beach today, you are mentally managing the stress of September. This creates a cycle of anxiety that can rob you of the last—and often most beautiful—weeks of the season.
3 Ways to Reclaim your August:
1️⃣ Practice "Glimmer Hunting": A "Glimmer" is the opposite of a trigger. It’s a micro-moment that cues safety to your brain. When your mind jumps to September, intentionally find a summer glimmer—the smell of cut grass or the warmth of the sun on your arm.
2️⃣ Boundaries with "The Noise": You don't have to engage with the "Back to School" rush yet. Limit your time in stores or on social media pages that are pushing "Fall Productivity" until you are actually ready for it.
3️⃣ Acknowledge the Mourning: Simply saying, "I am feeling sad because I value this time of year," can lower the intensity of the emotion.
Don’t let the mourning of "tomorrow" steal the peace of "today." There is still so much summer left to live. 🕊️🧡
