Tattoos can hold parts of a story that someone may not be ready—or feel safe—to share.

Today, On The Scene Training presented our MDT Tattoo Training at the Regional Human Trafficking MDT Summit put on by Office of Stafford County Sheriff exploring how multidisciplinary teams can approach these conversations with respect, privacy, and care.

We discussed what tattoos may reveal within an investigation, how to ask about the who, what, when, where, why, and how without assuming their meaning, and how tattoo removal or cover-up can fit into a coordinated recovery plan.

A tattoo alone does not establish trafficking. Understanding its meaning starts with listening to the person wearing it.

When discussing removal or cover-up, the survivor’s choices, safety, and readiness must guide the process with support from their team and qualified, trauma-informed professionals.

The more conversations I have about what human trafficking can look like in the tattoo chair, the more questions I’ve been asked about what it can look like behind the tattoo chair.

I didn’t bring this to the artists. Artists brought it to me. They have shared experiences and business models that have raised some very important questions about labor trafficking within the industry.

Simply Report is one of the ways we can safely report suspected human trafficking when we see it or when we think we may have experienced it ourselves. You do not have to know for sure before reaching out.

A reporting pathway has been opened specifically for information coming from the tattoo industry. If you have experienced someone “holding” your passport or visa, or another situation that concerns you, you can report it and reference --- CLEOPATRA.

📱SNAPCHAT WARNING TO PARENTS: THIS IS HOW PREDATORS FIND YOUR BABIES

Detectives say Keynin Burgess, 24, used Snapchat to target girls. Victims identified so far are 11 to 17. The case is still open. If you think your child may have been contacted, call 540-582-7115.

An 11 year old on SNAPCHAT is not just social media. It is a stranger access app.

Why this app is dangerous for KIDS❓

⚠️ People can find and add children they do not know. Quick Add, search, and mutual friends make it easy for an adult to land in a kid’s chat.

⚠️Snaps disappear, so kids think the picture is gone. It is not. It can be screenshotted, screen recorded, or saved before it vanishes.

⚠️ Location features and public usernames can show
where a child is or make them easy to look up.

PREDATORS use the “it’s just a snap” feeling to push for nudes, then threaten the child if they refuse. That is exactly what this release describes.

If your child is ONLY 11, they DO NOT NEED TO BE ON SNAPCHAT. PERIOD. If you're too nice and they are older, you need the password, the username, and regular checks. “I TRUST THEM” is not a safety plan.

Well… I may have traumatized the whole convention this morning at the WV Tattoo Expo. 😬

Before the doors opened to the public, artists learned what human trafficking really is and then we brought it into their world: their shops, their chairs, tattoos, and how they can safely help.

With real cases, me on a microphone and the presentation on the big screen for the entire convention center to see, there were plenty of side conversations, “ah-ha” and “oh sh*t” moments, and some very visible shock and disgust.

But that’s exactly why these conversations matter.

And by request… we’re doing it again tomorrow morning.

We’re bringing a different conversation to the WV Tattoo Expo this weekend.

What I bring to the tattoo industry comes directly from conversations and partnerships with those working on the front lines, including the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC).

We’re seeing things involving tattoos that we didn’t expect and they don’t always look like what we’ve been taught to look for.

For the parents of children going back to school ...

Stop putting up those boards that give away all of your child's private information
Nobody needs to know who their teacher is
Nobody needs to know what school they go to 
Nobody needs to know what they wore to school that day so post when they get home

Social media is like a billboard and if you would not put this information about your child on a billboard, don't put it on social media !!!
