During COVID, my work shifted from prevention to intervention and everything changed.

My tattoo world collided with the realities of exploitation.

Now, I train on what most people miss: tattoos aren’t just art… they can be evidence, identity, control, and a doorway into much bigger conversations. And in the middle of it all while protecting both the survivor and the artist matters.

Grateful to be working alongside the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children. Had a powerful conversation with them today, this work is only getting deeper.

These cases are complex.
This piece is often overlooked.
Not anymore.

Today is our birthday!
19 years of On The Scene Training 🎉

Since 2007, On The Scene Training has continued to grow, evolve, and meet people where they are.

What started with traveling to tattoo shops and conventions and teaching CPR, First Aid, and Bloodborne Pathogens has grown into something much bigger.

Over the years, our work expanded from safety certification training into deeper education, harder conversations, and real-world prevention. Today, On The Scene Training provides training that goes beyond the basics, bringing together trauma-informed care, human trafficking training, internet safety, and industry-specific education that helps people understand what they’re seeing and how to respond.

Our work now reaches beyond the tattoo industry into training and education for frontline professionals, community members, and organizations who may encounter trauma, vulnerability, or exploitation in real time.

This didn’t start in an industry it started in conversations and in seeing a need that wasn’t being met. That need grew into work that helps people understand trauma, recognize exploitation, respond to red flags, and think differently about safety from every angle.

We have grown from teaching certifications…
to helping people connect safety, trauma, prevention, and understanding.

From tattoo shops and convention floors…
to community trainings, professional education, and multidisciplinary spaces while still in shops and convention floors.

From what began as hands-on safety training…
to work that now helps bridge the gap between industries, systems, and people.

19 years later, we are still growing, still learning, and still showing up wherever we’re needed!

Thank you to everyone who has trusted, supported, and grown with us along the way.

This is not just where we started.
This is how far we’ve come.

Year 19… let’s go.

We’ll be at the WV Tattoo Expo this weekend!!!

Sunday | 10 AM | in front of the stage

CPR, First Aid & Bloodborne
• Trafficking training (tattoo-specific)

Because some tattoos mean more than what’s on the surface and lately… we’re seeing it more in the industry.

Not everything is what it looks like…
but sometimes it is.

You’ve seen trafficking, you just didn’t realize it.
It’s about understanding what you’re looking at, trusting your gut, and knowing how to move smart.
Whether in your community or in your shop, learn how to read the signs and to report.

Sign up at the On The Scene Training booth!

As January comes to a close, we want to take a moment to reflect not because the work is finished, but because it’s expanding.

Through the National Human Trafficking Training Academy, we’ve been providing education both online and in person, and one thing has become increasingly clear:
Human trafficking education cannot be confined to a single awareness month.

This work requires continuous training, deeper understanding, and professionals who are equipped to recognize what trafficking truly looks like beyond myths and misconceptions.

Because of that commitment, our Human Trafficking Training is getting bigger.
We’re not saying how or where just yet… but we will.

Stay tuned. 👀

Tattoos can tell a story — but not always the story people expect.

This image breaks down the who, what, when, where, why, and how behind tattoos that may be connected to exploitation or trafficking. The most important thing to understand is this:

There is no single tattoo that automatically means trafficking.
Context matters.
The story behind the tattoo matters.

For some survivors, tattoos were used as a form of control, ownership, manipulation, or psychological branding. For others, tattoos may later represent survival, resilience, or reclaiming identity.

The danger comes when tattoos are judged without understanding — when assumptions replace education.

Awareness isn’t about labeling people.
It’s about understanding patterns, asking better questions, and responding with care and safety.

Tattoos don’t speak for themselves.
People do — when they’re given the space to be heard.
