Does a fever always mean your child needs to stay home from school?

Short answer? Yes. But there is more to it than just the number.

A fever of 100.4°F or higher means stay home. Most schools require it and it is the right call. But the number alone does not tell the whole story. How your child looks and acts matters just as much. A child with a low grade fever who seems completely fine is a different situation than a child with no fever who looks terrible.

The rule that actually matters: fever free for a full 24 hours without medication before going back. Not 12 hours. Not as soon as it breaks. 24 full hours.

Come in to Night Watch if the fever has lasted more than 3 days, keeps coming back after going away, comes with a rash, or your child is under 3 months old. Those are the signs that need to be evaluated.

Most parents never connect these everyday symptoms to a nutrient gap. But these signs show up slowly and blend right in with normal kid behavior, which is exactly why they are so easy to miss.

Iron, zinc, magnesium, B vitamins, vitamin D, and omega 3s are the nutrients children most often fall short on. When levels dip, the brain and body start sending signals. Tiredness that sleep does not fix. Getting sick more than usual. Mood swings. Dry skin. Poor focus.

Food should always come first. But many children have limited diets or sensory challenges, so supplements can play a helpful role when guided by a provider.

This does not mean every symptom points to a deficiency. The goal is to help parents recognize patterns and know when something is worth looking into.

Every parent knows the feeling. Your child wakes up saying they do not feel well and you have no idea whether to send them to school or keep them home.

Your baby cannot point to where it hurts. But their body is always communicating, and ear infections are one of the most common things we see in infants and toddlers at Night Watch.

Here is what to watch for.

👉 Pulling or tugging at one or both ears
👉 Unusual fussiness or crying, especially at night
👉 Trouble sleeping or waking up more than usual
👉 Fever, particularly after a cold or respiratory illness
👉 Fluid or discharge coming from the ear
👉 Not responding to sounds or seeming like they cannot hear well
👉 Refusing to eat, sucking and swallowing can put pressure on an infected ear and make feeding painful

One or two of these on their own might not mean much. But two or more showing up together, especially after a cold, is a good reason to come in and let us take a look.

Ear infections in babies and toddlers are very common, very treatable, and much easier to manage when caught early.
