One of our incoming therapists took a visit to ARTfactory to check out their ARTfull Wellness workshop this week and had such an amazing time!

Children do not always communicate through words.
Sometimes they communicate through the story they repeat, the character they protect, the baby they rescue, the monster they defeat, or the world they build again and again.
Play is not “just play.” For children, play can be a language. It is one of the ways they show us what they feel, what they need, what feels scary, what feels powerful, and what they are working to understand.
When caregivers begin to see play this way, it can shift the way they respond. Instead of only correcting the behavior, they can become curious about what the child may be communicating underneath it.
In play therapy, we listen through play so children can feel seen, supported, and understood in the language that comes most naturally to them.
At Integrated Play Connections, we help caregivers and professionals better understand the language of play.

Separation and divorce can bring up so much for children, and it can also leave caregivers wondering if they are saying or doing the right thing.
What do I say?
How much do I explain?
What if my child keeps asking the same questions?
How do we make transitions between homes feel less hard?
What if their behavior seems different all of a sudden?
Children do not always process big changes through direct conversation. Sometimes they process through behavior, play, repeated questions, tears, anger, control, regression, or wanting extra closeness.
That is why we created our Separation & Divorce Emotional Safety resources.
They were made to help caregivers have simple language, practical tools, and a little more support during a season that can feel really tender.

The end of the school year can bring up a lot for kids.
There is excitement, anticipation, schedule changes, classroom goodbyes, tired bodies, and often less predictability than usual. For some children, that can show up as anxiety, irritability, clinginess, big emotions, sleep changes, or more challenging behavior at home.

During this season, small things can make a big difference. More connection. More routine. More movement. More room for feelings. More repair after hard moments. More moments where your child feels seen, heard, and safe with you.
And if your child is having a harder time moving through transitions, anxiety, big emotions, or behavior concerns, support is available.

Integrated Play Connections is now accepting new clients for play therapy in Manassas, VA. We specialize in working with children ages 3–12 and would be honored to support your family.

being a new play therapist is a weird mix of
“i care so much about this”
and
“am i doing this right at all?”
you can feel grounded in the room…
and then replay everything on the drive home
if that’s you, you’re not doing it wrong
you’re just learning how to hold something that really matters
and that kind of learning is messy at first
we’ve been there too, which is why we started building out resources to support that in-between space
the reflecting, the second guessing, the trying again
if you need something to help you feel a little more grounded in the process, you can find them through our therapist resource library

Children deserve to see families like theirs reflected in the stories they read.
Books that celebrate LGBTQIA+ families help children understand that families can look many different ways and still be full of love, safety, connection, and belonging.
Whether a child has two moms, two dads, LGBTQIA+ caregivers, chosen family, or simply wants to better understand the people around them, inclusive books create space for children to feel seen and to see others with compassion.
Representation matters. Belonging matters. And every child deserves stories that remind them their family is worthy of being celebrated.

Parenting can feel like a lot sometimes.

The noise, the needs, the guilt after a hard moment, the pressure to get it all right.

For me, the things that help most are usually small.

Getting outside for a few minutes in the morning. Playing for a little bit without trying to multitask. Saying something kind out loud when my child needs connection. Coming back to repair when I wish I had handled something differently.

None of these make parenting perfect, but they do help me feel a little more grounded and a little more like myself.

And sometimes, families need a little extra support too.

At Integrated Play Connections, we support children and families through play therapy, child therapy, and parent support. If your child is struggling with big feelings, anxiety, meltdowns, transitions, or behavior that feels hard to understand, we would love to connect with you.

Sometimes childhood anxiety does not look like worry.
It can look like anger, avoidance, control, clinginess, repeated questions, stomachaches, trouble sleeping, or meltdowns over something that seems small from the outside.
This can be really hard for parents, especially when the behavior feels intense or confusing.
But when we pause and look underneath the behavior, we can often see a child who is overwhelmed, unsure, scared, or trying to regain a sense of control.
That does not mean limits do not matter. They do.
But children often need connection and regulation before they can access problem-solving, flexibility, or better choices.

At Integrated Play Connections, we support children and families through developmentally informed therapy that helps children feel seen, supported, and better able to work through big feelings.

Limit setting can feel hard because it often happens in the moments when everyone is already overwhelmed.
The bedtime battle.
The toy being thrown.
The child who keeps pushing.
The adult trying so hard to stay calm.
But in Child-Centered Play Therapy, limits are not a break from connection. They can actually become part of the connection.
A clear, steady limit can communicate:
“I am still with you.”
“Your feelings are allowed.”
“And I will help keep this space safe.”
In this new blog post, we’re talking about why limit setting is often therapeutic, how the ACT model helps us hold both compassion and clarity, and why children need adults who can stay warm, steady, and consistent even when things feel hard.
Read the full post on the blog.
And if you want to go deeper, our upcoming training, The Limit as Therapy, will explore limit setting through a Child-Centered Play Therapy lens.
