I love the “work” I get to do, especially when the results of a session are so dramatic.
Last Friday, a client came in with a history of chronic neck pain and an injury sustained 5 days prior to the appointment. The day after the incident warranted a trip to the Emergency Dept with imaging, a toridol shot, and some steroids.
Upon arrival for the appointment with me, the client was unable to turn his head at all, in either direction, the side of his neck was painful to the touch, and he claimed 9/10 for pain.
I spent 40 minutes working gently at first to warm up and calm the superficial tissues. Continuing to work slowly, progressively increasing the pressure in minute amounts until able to work deep enough to work with the muscles that were tight, restricted, and causing him pain.
Once he had flipped over and was now facing up, I asked him to see if he could turn his head to either side at all. He could. I spent the next 20 or so minutes working on the sides of his neck the same way I did while he was facing down.
Then I asked him to turn his head again and see how it felt. He felt a spot on the right side that was pulling and painful when he turned. So, I applied pressure he could tolerate easily, mobilized his neck and had him take some slow, deep breaths and we both felt the muscle release and relax.
When he got off the table, he was surprised to realize that he had gone from zero mobility to being able to turn his head 30 degrees in either direction and his pain had gone from 9/10 to 3 or 4/10.
He has a follow up session this week and we’ll see how he’s doing.
