Hello, I’m Heidi Eckroth, owner and provider here at Eckroth Counseling!

I thought it was time for a little re-introduction, especially for those who may be new around here, and share a little more about the heart behind Eckroth Counseling.

I’m a counselor who believes that asking for support is a sign of strength, not weakness. I feel honored to walk alongside individuals and families as they navigate life’s challenges, work through difficult experiences, build confidence, and work towards meaningful changes.

At Eckroth Counseling, I strive to provide a supportive, compassionate space for children, teens, adults, and families. Counseling can look different for everyone, so my goal is to meet each individual where they are at, while helping them develop the tools and understanding they need to move forward.

If you’ve been considering counseling for yourself or your child, you don’t have to wait to reach out. Sometimes we just need a safe place to slow down, make sense of what we’re experiencing, and have someone walk alongside us.

I’m incredibly thankful to be part of this community and to have the opportunity to provide a place where people can come as they are.

So, whether you’ve been following Eckroth Counseling from the beginning or you’re just finding my page, welcome! I’m glad you’re here. 🌿

Summer may not be over, but you may want to start considering early preparation for your kids to get their schedules back on track!

Research has shown that emotional readiness, consistent routines, and early preparation are key to supporting a smooth transition back to school.

So where do we start??
😴SLEEP! - Let's be real, kids' sleep habits often can get quite off track throughout the summer. Start preparing your children at least 2-3 weeks in advance with getting back on a normal sleep schedule. Sleep is critical for attention, memory, emotional regulation, and physical health.

☀ Build upon emotional readiness & support overall mental health - Back-to-school anxiety is real for a large percentage of kids, even for those who enjoy school. Talking about their thoughts on the change with discussion involving validation and coping skill building can be very beneficial.

📚Get kids involved with school preparation and practicing back to school routines - Let them pick out school supplies and have discussions on preparing for those back-to-school visits. Talk with them about their teachers or subjects and discuss what things they may get to look forward to as well as others they may be nervous about. Kids can also help make choices on ways they can get themselves back into more of a daily routine by helping to decide ways they can work to begin getting up earlier or by choosing activities they can work on throughout their day!

Did you know that studies have shown assigning regular, age-appropriate chores to children can promote academic success, life skills, emotional development, and long-term well-being.

A study of nearly 10,000 children that began in 2010 found that those who did more chores in kindergarten scored higher in academic abilities, peer relationships, and overall life satisfaction by third grade, even after controlling for family income and education.

Tips for implementing chores:
🏠 Starting early can help show kids how capable they are of doing things on their own, like helping to pick up their toys.
🏠Be consistent. Follow a routine so your child knows what to expect.
🏠Don’t expect perfection. If your child is helping with a willing attitude, don’t criticize the job they’re doing. Instead, make sure you provide plenty of praise and encouragement. You can help provide guidance and further direction along the way.
🏠Be specific. “Clean your room,” can be interpreted in many ways. Instead, try giving more detailed directions such as, “Pick up your dirty laundry and put your toys on the shelf.”

A Harvard Study of Adult Development showed that children who had age-appropriate chores grow into adults with stronger work ethics, higher life satisfaction, and better personal and professional relationships. Chores can help instill habits and skills that persist into adulthood, supporting both personal fulfillment and career success.

What is one way you can get your child more involved at home? 🌻

If mornings feel overwhelming or rushed, start with incorporating one or two small changes to your routine. Progress is built through sustainable steps, not complete overhaul.

Try incorporating one or two of these simple habits to start your day:

⏰ Set your alarm 5-10 minutes earlier to help yourself have a few extra minutes to start the day.

☀️ Take a few deep breaths before reaching for your phone.

💧 Drink some water to help your body wake up and rehydrate.

📝 Identify one realistic goal for the day instead of focusing on a long to-do list and consider the steps needed to reach it.

🚶 Move your body, even if it's just a short walk or gentle stretching.

🙏 Practice gratitude by thinking of one thing you're looking forward to or appreciate.

💬 Check in with yourself by asking, "What do I need today?" and follow it up with how you can support yourself in ensuring that need is met.

Remember, small and consistent changes often have the biggest and longest lasting impact over time. So, what small change might you make this week?
